Twins insurance?!

Hiya,

I would like to take out an insurance against having twins so I wondered if there is anybody out there who has done this.
The probability is quite high - my OH has twin brothers, his aunties are twins and my mum has twin aunties on her side. I already have 1 child but I'm expecting again and have a funny feeling....

Many thanks for your kind help.

I'm posting this on Insurance and Families boards as not too sure who will know this.

Insurance against having twins? Are you wanting to know if insurance companies will insure you and pay out if you have twins? Is so, then no - thats pretty ludicrous to be honest! (no offence intended!)

no, you are right hapsetsovet, it does exist, I tried to convince my friend to take it when she was expecting, as she too had lots of twins in the family. I think it was with Zurich insurance. However, I did a quick "google" and came up with http://www.askbaby.com/topic/multiple-birth-insurance.htm hope that gives you a start. If I remember corectly, you have to take the insurance out before around 12 weeks.

    Hope that helps

personally (and there is a history of twins in my family, even if no one has managed to carry both to term for the past few generations) i would rather pay the money into a high interest account.

perhaps when i am more enlightened about it, i may change my mind, but from what i know of it so far, it seems silly.

you're going to know whether you've been engaging in the activity that makes babies, and whether you're 'at risk' of becoming preggers.

if you have a history of multiple births in the family, you are more likely than not to know about it.

you're going to know fairly early on into the pregnancy whther you are expecting one child or more, arent you?

isnt it just easier to make financial plans sufficiently in advance of intending to become pregnant? babies are going to be expensive, whether you have one or three...

i just really feel like im missing the point here  (wouldnt be the 1st time :D)

does the policy pay out a hell of a lot more than you paid in, in the event of a multiple birth? more than you get from saving yourself?

what if (god forbid) you lose one or more of the babies during pregnancy/birth?

do you get the money before or after you give birth?

  • Thanks for your posts everyone.
I have now looked into it and there are few companies who do this. From what I can see the, the premium is a one off payment at around £40-£50 and one can choose amount of lump sump paid after the babies are born - min £1000 upto I think £5000. I don't think it will be a waste of time paying the premium - it cost an absolute fortune to buy all the necessary kit for my first baby (puschair, carseats, cot, clothes etc).
I really don't see why someone would think it ridiculous to take out this insurance. I suppose we are all different..

I think you are very sensible in considering this. I guess it is like most other insurance - you hope you do not have to claim (or maybe not!) but you are glad you are covered if you do have to claim

    Hope all goes well
  • I have twins and the extra cost is phenomenal. I would recommend going for the insurance policy. You have to take it out prior to your first scan which I think maybe up to 18 weeks of pregnancy. I would recommend going for the highest payout even if it seems high. The premium depends on family history, your age and previous births. You will not necessarily "know" if you are carrying twins. Many pregnancies begin as twins and mothers are none the wiser (many only learn this if they have an early scan). It is not a ridiculous idea. The insurance company will only pay out if you give birth to 2 babies. Good luck - if you have twins you will be truly blessed x
  • I looked into this and am amazed that such a thing exists. It seems you have to take it out before 11 weeks of pregnancy, I think because most first scans are done at 12 weeks.

There is much more expense with multiple births than with one so I suppose it does have a certain logic to it. I presume the same type of insurance would be possible to take out if one was worried about the expense if your child was born with a disability?

It seems like a minefield though.
