Creamed Coconut? (merged)

I'm making one of Curry Queens famous curries but last night at the supermarket I picked up a block of creamed coconut instead of coconut cream
Now, I asked my Mum and she said to grate it in but I wanted to make sure as my Mum's approach to cooking anything is 'oh it'll be alright... just shove it in', which is great as she's a fantastic cook but it's my first go at this curry and I'm not up to the 'ah just bung it in' stage yet
Any suggestions?

I'm sure CQ will be along in a moment and probably give me a ticking off for adulterating her recipes but I use block creamed coconut in place of coconut cream.
Block Cream - This resembles a block of fat (lard) and can be added in chunks directly into the recipe although grating makes it easier to incorporate. It can also be diluted with boiling water to make coconut milk - 200g/7oz creamed coconut will make about 600ml/20fl.oz. of thickish coconut milkMy weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I have used block cream coconut in a curry before and it works just fine. I've also been to Vietnam where they use it in their curries. So go ahead and use it :money:2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I just grate mine and add it to whatever I'm making. If you need coc nut milk, as Ted says, blend grated coconut cream with water until you reach the desired consistency. Voila there you go0

I've just bought a fabulous asian recipe book and it also says you can use it instead. In fact it says you can even make your own coconut crem or milk out of desiccated coconut and water. PM me if you want the recipe. Mmmh, lucky you for getting the famous C_Q curry tonight :drool:Three years, six months, three weeks, 13 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds. 26011 cigarettes not smoked, saving $11,704.80. Thanks everyone
I'm just making the curry sauce at the moment. The onion mixture's cooling on the cooker and I've made the tomato/spice mixture too.
I'm going for a Korma as it's really the only curry I like. Hubby LOVES curry so if it turns out ok I'll progress onto spicy ones for him.

OMG!!! ... what a find... AND ... she does her base sauces in more or less the same way :j ... (that is supposed to be a restaurant secret but looks like it's leaking out all over the place :rotfl: )
Oh I'm gonna have to go and study some of her curries now and try some out, especially as I notice she's already worked out a Murgh Makhani but it looks quite a bit different to mine!
Hey this is brilliant! Thanks A_B :A
Oh and Jay-Jay, yup creamed coconut is fine as everyone has already said... and no, I don't have a particular recip for either Madras or Vindaloo, but I bet you'll find one on that site above
