<When I was little we lived in the middle of the country in an old house and remember the fern pattern frost on the inside of the windows - I used to try and get dressed under the bed covers. Anyone remember wearing thick vests in the winter? (and no I'm not ancient!)[/QUOTE]>
I too remember wearing a thick 'Vyella vest' when I was small. We lived in a big barn of a place, and it was always cold in the winter. My Dad had bought it after the War really cheaply, there were 12 rooms on three floors, but it was so expensive to heat we stayed in the downstairs rooms only After ten long cold winters my Mum persueded my Dad to cut his losses and sell it before the family died of frost bite. I can remember thick frost on the inside of the windows and a large tin bath in the kitchen in which we all had a bath in. The kitchen had an old black range in it and we had toast on a fork from the front of it .Waiting for my dad and elder brother to come home as they had thick great-coats which went over my feet in bed in the wintertime.
Thank goodness that I have central heating and double glazing, you can keep the 'good old days' they were far too uncomfortable, apart from the toast which always tasted better than from a pop-up toaster.0 -
I saw a lady on the TV once and she made key hole covers out of old tennis balls. She cut them in half, made a hole in the top, and threaded some string through. Then hung them from the door handle to keep out the drafts!!
Me personally, lots of clothes, a rug, hot chocolate and lots of cuddles with my dog keep me warmComping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -

My one annoyance is that I haven't yet managed to find a really good pair of gloves for my cycle into work. I think fingers get colder if you're moving fast and the exercise doesn't warm them up. It's only a short ride but even with two pairs of gloves on, my fingers are always really painful by the time I arrive. Any suggestions? Are leather gloves any good?
If you're near an Aldi store, they may still have some of their Winter Cycling gear from last Thursday (29 Sep).
They had Winter Cycling Gloves at £3 with a 'waterproof, breathable membrane'. They didn't look to have much padding though. The Winter Cycling Jacket did look very good quality for £10.
My Aldi winter cycling gloves from last year (different design) are still going strong but all my gloves have never been breathable enough. What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
For cycling gloves, try a pair of thin cotton gloves with a pair of woollen gloves on the top.I used to do that. When I cycled to work, the wool used to get caught in the gear changers which were on the down tube but that wouldnt be a problem with a modern bike as the gear changers are incorporated into the handlebar.0

Well, I'm very hardy no heating on as yet and still have summer duvet on the bed. Have started to wear winter coat to work on a morning as its a bit chilly 1st thing, but still only with short sleaves underneath I haven't got my woolies out yet, hopefully it will be another couple of weeks before the heating goes on.0

LOL - the other evening I ran my foot sugestively down Mrs MATH leg. Turning to her I whispered in her ear "Blimey your legs need shaving!" It was then she confessed to wearing a pair of fluffy Primark bedsocks:eek: Being a true MSE'r I havn't gone out and bought bedsocks. I wear a pair of normal ones that have lost their elasticity and need constant pulling up if you're vertical.;)
Going off on a bit of a tangent... I was in Primark the other day and they were selling ladies stretchy boxers briefs with a FLYHOLE:eek: Why? Who? What?:eek:Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
Math, looks like me and mrs Math both have good taste..
