I have been trying to persuade my husband to ditch Sky but can I reassure him that you can get all the sport channels on Freesat with the box?

    Hi
No you can't get the sport channels on freesat, you have to subscribe to sky to get the sky sports channels. The only sky programme you get on freesat is sky news, all the other channels don't belong to sky, they are freeview.
As for the sky+ you will be able to record only the freesat channels.
    To recap
If you cancel sky, you can keep the box and watch freeview channels on it, not sky channels, for these you have to pay.

    Hope this helps
  • Iv'e always thought about ditching Sky but freeview/freesat has such a limited channel choice you can't compare the two.

I don't miss sky at all, but when I didn't have the sky+ features I really missed that. What I find is that when I want to watch TV there is nothing on, (even if I have all the sky channels), but with sky+ there is always something in the planner.
Have a look at your planner and see which channels you usually record from, mine was mostly the main 5 terrestrial, I do like some programmes on living, but £15 per month for them is a bit steep.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
  • Hi
As I've said before, I ditched sky got a topfield 5800 pvr, twin tuner, 160gb hd, freeview, use to pay £25.00 a month just to watch 4 channels, cbeebies, disney, skyone and E4, still got E4 and cbeebies on my toppy, so I'm only missing Skyone and the kids aren't missing the disney channel. so all in all sky wasn't worth £25.00, a month, so leaving sky was the best thing I ever did.

    Hope this helps
  • Hi. Just moved to a block of flats which has a communal sky aerial dish-thing (not quite sure how to describe it, but next to my TV aerial socket there's a sky socket) which isn't in a freeview area.

If I get freesat, I'll pay about £100 for a box but then will get the channels free. Or I can get the basic sky package for £15 a month (half price for 3 months). If I do this latter option, I can then cancel sky after 12 months and still use the box to get freesat. Is that right? Sounds better cos then I can get SkyOne, E4, UKTVGold and Hallmark at least for 12 months (maybe more if Sky offer to cheapen my contract when I ask to cancel).
Is it only ITV2 that I could get on Freesat and not Sky?

Any opinions? Should I go for sky or freesat or is there a different option I haven't considered?

Sky are funny about communual systems, and may not offer you a free installation - check first. ITV2 is available on satellite regardless of if you pay for a Sky subscription or not.

After the 12 months, the box is yours. Provided you are fully settled up with Sky, what you watch with it (i.e. free channels) is up to you.
  • Thanks Ash3G.

Thought it might be cheaper having a communal aerial if anything. Can't believe they may charge me to set it up. Won't be getting sky then. Plus, I can't get the Quidco cashback cos I'm communal and can't do it all online. How annoying! Guess I'll be phoning sky up.

If Sky refuse to do a free install, all is not lost.

You can always buy a good free-to-air satellite system that can be plugged in and get all the free channels (except Channel 4/5 and Sky Three) for around £70-80. All you'd need to buy is some cable to plug it into the wall with (assuming you know the satellite connection is definately live and not just a dummy wall socket).

Alternative if you crave pay television you can get a Sky box second hand from eBay or buy one outright.

Cheap freeview boxes from £29.99 and no sky subscription

    Hope this helps
  • Hey folks, can't see that anyone has already mentioned this so far but do make sure that you check Freeview is available in your area before doing anything rash.

As of yet, we can't receive it here where I live input your postcode on this page Here and check before you make the final desicion!
