hi
can anyone point me in the right direction here!
i finally told sky to politely go take a running jump and cancel my contract, i recently paid for sky + and was wondering whether i can use it as a freeview box. if so, can i still use it as a hard drive to record programmes.
Do i need a card and if so where do i get one from.
Any help will be appreciated

Your viewing card will automatically become a 'Freesat from Sky' card.
To keep the recording features, you must continue to pay Sky £10 per month.
If you don't pay that, the box will still work, but won't be able to record.0 -
I don't think you can just spend £10 to keep the recording features, I think you have to have a subscription of some sort.0

You can.
The £10 is a 'subscription' for the sky+ recording features.0 -
I too told sky to cancel my sky+ contract after paying through the nose for far too many channels that nobody ever watches! I did this a few months ago before the new pricing structure and decided I still wanted the sky+ functions and freeview channels so I started investigating. After much reading on https://www.digitalspy.co.uk I decided to buy a thomson dhd4000 freeview recorder for about £140. I am so pleased with it and have not missed sky+ at all! It does virtually everything that sky+ does but without incurring a subscription! The planner is better than sky's as it is 2 weeks not 1,it records 2 channels at once as sky+ does and allows you to do all the pause & rewind of live tv etc. the fast forward goes up to 64 times normal speed, you can toggle between programmes whilst pausing-a major improvement over sky! the times i had paused something before then forgetting changed channel to check something or gone to the program menu and lost the paused bit! It took no more than a minute to install and it is a british made product with fantastic support in THIS country charged at normal call rates! I had a problem with it the other day and rung them and resolved the problem in 30 seconds because they have knowledgable staff! not what I was expecting after 10 years of dealing with sky! I can not recommend this product highly enough!0

Thanks
will look into this, I am hoping Sky will refund the cost of the box as it was faulty, any advise would be appreciated.0 -
a good quality pvr (they start at less than £200) would probably be as good as sky+ if not betterthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok
I trust BH even if he's from Manchester..
all your base are belong to us :eek:0 -
excuse my ignorance, but can the Thomson box plug into the sky receiver - my terrestrial aerial is awful?0

It still has a warranty so they will have to fix it even if they do not refund. Then your best bet may be to put it on Ebay and buy a HDD recorder?0

In response to notcosi I'm not sure about connecting it through sky but give the thompson helpline a call I'm sure they'll be able to answer you're question. 01788 541970.0
