Second generation Iphone - who else is planning on getting one?

Looks like it could be bad news for people planing on buying one and unlocking it without a contract though. Apple now lists the stockists as now just being O2 stores and The Carphone Warehouse (No Apple stores/Apple online). Most likely because you will have to sign up for the contract instore rather than when you get it home which Apple themselves probably don't have the ability to do.
£160 for the 16Gb version isn't too bad, but I am still dissuaded by the £35 tariff (yes there's a new £30 tariff, but with 75 mins and 125 texts it's pathetic).
What interests me is the plan to make it available on a PAYG system, which would mean I could get one for my girlfriend (read as "for me to play with") without having to tie her into a contract. Am wondering how much it will cost tho'.
Not so impressed with O2 finding a good home for old iPhones though, would rather try and take advantage of those that appear on the 2nd hand market hopefully for cheap as a toy*I reserve the right to have an opinion, the right to change this opinion and the right to be wrong.*Hope that helps. The 'phone.
Apple's website describes it best. "Twice the speed, half the price". Except that the line rental isn't half the price, as well.
They've tarted up the original iPhone, given it 3G (which it always needed), added GPS and, yes, halved the price of the handset.
The maths.
O2's lowest tariff for it will be £30 a month for 18 months. On top of that, you'd have to pay £99 for the 8GB model or £159 for the 16GB.
Over 18 months, that comes out at £639 (8GB) or £699 (16GB). That's a hell of a lot cheaper than the £900 the first one cost but it's not exactly peanuts.
The usefulness.
Its shortcomings remain that it's got a sealed-in battery, no memory expansion slot and a camera that's only 2MP.
To me, the fact that for £30 a month you get only 75 minutes is not a deterrent. The main thing is that, for that, you get "unlimited" data transfer as well.
I've never seen this thing as being a 'phone - I see it as an iPod Touch that works where there's no WiFi signal. It's a data device.
When I want to speak to somebody - and I'm not driving a vehicle - I want to put a 'phone up to my ear. I also may want to discuss the information that I'm looking at on my data device. So, I don't want to walk around all day with a headphone stuck in my ear and I don't want to put my data device up to my ear to speak to people. Nor do I want to run down its battery by leaving it on standby for incoming 'phone calls all the time.
I like to have a reasonable camera (5MP) handy and I don't mind combining that into a 'phone: I don't take pictures when I'm on the 'phone.
Conclusion it's a nice data device to have when you're also carrying, say, a Sony Ericsson K850i which you use as a 'phone. Moreover, if you use Apple Macs it's a godsend because it and an IPod Touch are the only things that will fully synch with them.
It boils to whether you can get one at a price that justifies making an iPod Touch go live anywhere and you want the GPS.
The haggle.
So, what's the cheapest way to get one?
If you're already on O2 (or CPW O2) you can chop in your existing contract for an iPhone (specifically) at any time. But you won't get any favours on that.
If, however, you're nearing the end of an O2 (either) contract, or are due an upgrade, you can haggle. We all know that on a £25 a month contract you can squeeze about £270 (i.e. about 11 months) in upfront account credit out of (either) O2 if you renew for a year with SIM only.
I'd negotiate that and get it agreed. Then I'd say, "Pro-rata, that's £405 for 18 months, right?". It is, so they should concede. Then I'd say, "OK. Well a standard deal on an iPhone at that tariff costs £99 for the 'phone: so, credit my account with £306, send me a 3G iPhone and I'll sign up for 18 months."
How you'd fare after that point in the conversation depends on how good a negotiator you are...
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I got an email newsletter today saying it will be available 11 July onwards. The 8gb iphone 3g will be free on a £30 plus o2 tarif for customers who have the original iphone (you get to keep your old one too....sell on or pass to friend/family), there is a 16gb one too, which will be free to existing iphone o2 customers on £45 plus tariffs.
Both options start a new 18 month contract though."Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass....it's about learning how to dance in the rain"0 -
i could be tempted if they have one with 32gigs memory (my mp3s total 30gigs), a good camera and gps but then thats what i want from any phone.
By a Nokia N96, has 16GB built in. And you could buy a 16GB microsd card totalling 32GB.
Anyway I'm seriously considering the iPhone now since it is HSDPA, and GPS. Only if it had a 3MP camera i'd be happy.
I didn't buy the first one and cos of the camera doubt I will buy the second one. However Apple does seem to be moving forward.0 -
I've had my iphone 2 months on £35 tariff. Does that mean I an get this new phone for free and just make my contract 2 months longer and keep my existing phone aswell?0
