My hubby had MRSA after having his leg amputated, he didn't have it in his blood just in the wound. He had no ill-effects whatsoever apart from the fact that his wound took 8 months and a skin graft to heal instead of the usual 8 weeks! He did have to go into hospital for 14 days to have the antibiotics by IV which annoyed him because he didn't feel ill so he wanted to be home. The only time he ever hallucinated was after the amputation when he was high on morphine.

I can't offer any advice other than try to speak to his doctors, be very careful when you search for MRSA on the internet because you only tend to see the scare stories which are frightening. When I found out hubby had it I was convinced he was going to die but calmed down when I spoke to his doctor and as it turned out my hubby was fine.

Try not to worry too much (easy to say I know) and I hope your Dad gets well soon.

I've seen those horror stories - and while they are indeed horrific they really are quite rare indeed. My dad is otherwise fit and healthy, I don't know if I've said so in this thread but he doesn't smoke, very rarely drinks, keeps fit walking the dog and working in his allotment so he's in good shape to fight off any infections.

We've got conflicting reports that Mum and the family will be trying to sort out today. One was that it was just a colony on his skin, which can be nothing more than a nuisance, but the other was that it was found in the output of one of his drains and that is rather more serious. So it's a question of waiting for answers.

Anyway, there's nowt I can do but cross me fingers and hope for the best.

You'll be pleased to know that I uncross them for typing because I'm hopeless at typing with them crossed! :)

  • Researching on the net is great until you see something that you wished you hadn't (I've done this) so you just have to keep your balanced outlook and, as you say, fingers crossed and hope for the best outcome.

All the best for you all.

    An update...

Dad is out of HDU and has been in the next level down for several days now. I've completely lost track of who I've told what and where (thanks to so many of you for asking) so I thought I'd post this.

Dad still gets confused but not as badly as when he thought the Japanese were invading, thank goodness.

The MRSA is in one of his drain wounds which isn't so good, and they took 700mils of fluid out of his chest yesterday but are struggling with the gas pressure build up and inflamation in his stomach.

We got his post op biopsy reports yesterday and when he's strong enough he's going to have to go on chemo.

So I'm still waiting for word on when it would be sensible to go and see him and also not be a burden to a very worried mum.
