Glad i've just seen this thread!

I was just about to switch suppliers for my parents from Scottish Gas to Powergen according to the Energy Helpline Website they could save £150 by switching to the Energy Online Tariff, however i will hang fire now until Martin advises further.

This has probably already been asked a few times but any idea when Martin will be advising us to change, i mean are we talking weeks or months??.. Its just that as more and more time goes by we are still getting charged the higher rates from our current energy suppliers.
  • Is there anyway the price per unit could be quoted to save calculating the amount of gas/electricity you use in a year. This way you get to see a straight comparison.

Apologies to Martin if this is the way he does it already - just I've never looked.

  • So does that mean that I shouldn't opt for the 2010 price freeze with British Gas then? They emailed asking me to sign up for the price freeze. So, if I don't switch provider and I don't opt for the price freeze, shall I just stay as I am?

    Please help,

    Very confused!

I've had nothing but problems with powergen and as my bills are due in any time now I can't wait to be told its time to change.

To answer the 'how long are we talking'.... probably a month or two of holding

I wouldn't sign up for the 2010 price freeze. It's being predicted that gas prices will fall around 2007. With the price freeze your prices won't go up but neither will they come down so you may be locked into a high tariff.
  • I used the comparison sites a few weeks ago (except energyhelpline which gives javascript errors and doesn't work with browsers on macs, apparently) and both uswitch and energylinx showed Telecom Plus to be the cheapest with a 25% saving from my present suppliers - Manweb and British Gas.
Having read Martin's advice and spoken to Telecom Plus, it appears most complaints relate to their monthly direct debits being set too high - they assured me that I could change the amount every month if I wished, so I would pay actual amounts owed each time.
I am now waiting for the contract to arrive so I can switch, but checked again on the above sites and energylinx now shows Telecom Plus with a much higher total for combined power (£1237 compared with £1078 previously - I'm a high user), whereas uswitch shows the same figures as previously. Telecom Plus don't seem to have made any announcements about price increases - do energylinx know something is coming? I note that Telecom Plus's website now incorporates a price calculator using energylinx data.

Martin's advice seems to be that 'don't switch' will apply for possibly a couple of months - bearing in mind it takes 6 weeks to switch, it would be mid January before I would be with a new supplier, having spent some of the coldest months with a high price setup. Should I switch now and recalculate later?

    Thanks,

    John

How often can you switch? I mean, if I switched now and the market stomped about a bit and levelled off, when could I switch again?
