help me out im making a stew?

hi first time ive posted but i have been an avid old styler for a while
have some lamb steaks (on offer at asda)
potatoes
leeks
mushrooms
carrots
seasonings etc
need to make a yummy dinner for tonight 2 adults 2 kids
no slow cooker do i just wack it all together and cook it slowly or is there more method to it than that.im worried about the lamb making everything taste fatty its not a meat i usually buy.
please help if you can

ps have trawled through many moneysaver recipes to no avail

Irish Stew
Serves 4
1 pound lean mutton pieces
1 pound carrots
1 pound onions
1 pound potatoes
salt & pepper
pinch of thyme
Place the mutton with thyme in a saucepan and add cold water to cover. Bring slowly to the boil and simmer for one hour.Skim off any fat that rises while cooking. Add onions, potatoes, carrots, all peeled. Season with salt and pepper. Continue cooking until vegetables are tender. Season to taste.0 -
Lamb and leek casserole
Ignore the suff about cooking the leg of lamb on day one, just coat your diced lamb in seasoned flour, add everything to the pot and slow cook all day. Halve the liquid content and parboil your carrots for ten minutes before adding them in.
You can whizz some of your veggies at the last minute to thicken or you can use cornflour if needed.

thanks folks they both sound great do you think i could wack some leeks in with the irish stew recipe rather than onion?
sorry if im sounding dim i just want this to be a sucess as stews are gonna become a regular part of my meal planner all being well due to their cheapness!

Yep, you can use leeks. Just make sure they are well washed, all the dirt gets stuck in between the layers, slice them up nice and fine, there you go in no time at all a lovely stew0

I can't see any reason why you can't use the leeks, there's no hard and fast rules about it so you can add whatever you like
I'd use thyme and a bay leaf to flavour and also add some pearl barley if you have some, which is wonderful in lamb stews"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

only thing to watch is that you don't add too much water, I've done this many times in the past and ended up with a soup rather than a stew0

hhmmm all going wrong followed your instructions added the veg but the meat has gone kinda grey and tough looking should i just keep it simmering or is it past hope?
