Puma: Crankshaft's pulley broke in a cambelt change!............MORE UPDATE !!!

As you say yourself, it's 7 years old. It's been on there 7 years undisturbed and is highly likely to be a sod to get off. TBH, if they're doing it for cost of parts I think I'd just go along with it.
I agree. By the way, there shouldn't be any extra labour costs at all to replace the pulley in question. You have to remove it to be able to replave the cambelt anyway.;)
Just for fun, "if I didn't find someone on a forum who has had the crank pulley let go, it doesn't mean it happens all the time!!!"Just because you've not found someone on a forum who has had the crank pulley let go doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

LOL, good point there. At least you've found a garage who have said that it has to be taken off as part of the belt change anyway so there's no charge. I know plenty would bill the full time for a crank pulley change.

have you tried asking at the puma owners club online???

I've thanked you for your post because at last someone on MSE has posted rationally instead of screaming their head off at the garage for breaking their car in the hope of recompense. :T I hope all goes well.
Thank you. I hope it goes well as well. I know my fair bit about cars and I know what it looks like to get plastice parts off metal as in this type of weather, the rust build up and over stretch the surrounding plastic making it very hard at times to remove. I could have broken it myself if I tried to get it off.
Somebody has mentioned to me something about a 6mm thread used to push the pulley off the crankshaft. I don't know if they have used it and it broke the thing OR they haven't and as result, it broke!!
We will seeBe nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
I did, out of interest, but, all the replies were "The garage should foot the bill" type of answers. Because of that, I felt I might be taken for a ride and they shouldn't break it, even though I know any part in any car can break anytime within reasons. These are cars, unfortunately.Johnny_Cogs wrote: »have you tried asking at the puma owners club online???

It is not a replacement part at cambelt change. It sould be a robust part that should give many years of trouble free service. As I said, I will go and see the broken bit and try to work out what happened.

Sounds like a fairly rare occurrence - unlike the current spate of dual mass flywheel failures.
The reason for using dual mass flywheels - to reduce vibration - now where have I heard that before ?
I think the garage may have done you a favour !0 -

Hi all
An update..
I spoke to the garage to see if the car is going to be ready as it is mid-day now and they haven't called yet. They said the part has not been delivered yesterday by the other Ford dealer. They had it but forgot to put it on the van.
They said, unfortunately, it has to wait till Monday now.
I askd them again about what has happened to the pulley. They said, as they were trying to get the pulley off, the outer bit of the pulley has come off, but not the bearing bit, which stayed behind on the crankshaft ( and this is what they meant by saying two pieces, not two halves, IYSWIM)
So, what do you think?Be nice, life is too short to be anything else.0
