I will do a korma without almonds. We often have that and my God children love it. Onion bhaji`s we can also have a go at also. For me, the great key is to experiment. There are 100`s of ways of making curry and that`s the fun. When you get the hang of it I think it`s pretty hard to make one that isn`t very nice.0

:beer: I've got the spices and the pestle&mortar but I'm just not confident about what to do with them ... so I normally end up opening a jar of ready made sauce ... it's always so disappointing!

I love korma but can't have it as it has almonds in it and my DD1 has a slight nut allergy so we tend not to have anything with nuts in around the house.
Mine doesn't have almonds. Its just my basic meat curry, with chicken instead of beef or lamb. The main change is that the chicken is added right at the beginning to make absolutely sure it's cooked thoroughly. Half a pot of yoghurt and a sachet of creamed coconut (it's easier to find than coconut milk) is added at the end.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Ooh I'm definitely in on this one! We love curry. I also love bombay potatoes but haven't the first idea how to make them! Our curry night is usually 50 euros (about £35) for me, DH, DD1 (6) and DD2 (3), so anything that will cut that bill will be most defnitely appreciated. My DD's both love garlic nans - the more garlicky the better!
when making your own you can leave it out, i use ground almonds in mine but often leave it out and you cant really tell the difference.
I would love to learn how to make bombay potatoes too they are my one weakness. When pregnant with my DS i needed bombay potatoes so much i cried and cried until my husband went and bought me 2 cartons of it from the local takeaway to eat all by myself.Still TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

OK as promised a simple curry. Before we start a couple of points. In true MSE form any meat you use can be cheap cuts as cooking it correctly should leave it nice and tender. Chicken always has the skin removed.
This is what we will use
2 tablespoons of oil (ghee, clarified butter is traditionaly used but we use bran, groundnut or sunflower oil)
2 large onions finely chopped
4 or 5 cloves of garlic or 2 teaspoons of ready minced
half inch square of ginger root grated or again 2 teaspoons of ready minced
tin of chopped tomatoes
2 teaspoons of coriander powder
2 teaspoons of cumin powder
one teaspoon of turmeric
teaspoonful of garam masala
whole dried red chillies to taste suggest 2 to start with, finely chopped
I have chosen 4 breast of chicken but you can use any meat you fancy or indeed 450 grams of mixed chopped vegetables
Heat the oil in a heavy pan and add the onion.Saute for about 10 minutes on a medium heat.Be careful not to burn them buy they should start to turn brown.Put aside. Now put in the garlic and ginger and fry for around 1 minute.Reduce heat and add the spices with the exception of the garam masala. If needed add a little more oil for the spices to cook in.After 30 seconds to one minute add back the onion and put in the tinned tomatoes.Add around 300 ml of water and bring to a simmer.Cook for 10 minutes
Now add the chicken breasts. I like to chop the breasts up first into bite size portions. You may have to add more water to cover. Carry on simmering until the meat is cooked.
We like our sauces think so if you are the same you might have to reduce the sauce toward the end of cooking.Keep an eye on things and aaa a little water if needed.
!0 minutes toward the end of cooking spoon in the garam masala to enhance the aroma.
Serve on a bed of rice.

Sounds yummy! Had a roast yesterday so shall use the left over meat to make this tomorrow I think, only need to grab a couple of the spices & a tin of Tomatoes when I do the shopping. :TYou cant take a step forward with both feet on the ground0
