This is funny, I just had a conversation with OH a few hours ago about pickled garlic cos I saw a recipe for beef meatball and picked garlic curry and it looked delish.
When using the garlic, do you rinse it off, is it picked in vinegar or summat?
I'm going to give the recipes a go on here during the week, look forward to seeing more. Would love a rogan recipe if you've any idea, oh and bombay potatoesDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
PN, don`t forget, favour any Asian shop for getting your spices, get them in powder form.. You don`t need a wok, you nac use a frying pan or if you want a heavy saucepan.Garlic, yes it does dry out. I think Morrisons do it in a jar at 99p. I use that when feeling lazy (like most of the time).
Most important EXPERIMENT and IMPROVISE. Once you have the basics, like the first curry we made here it is unlikely that you will always produce something edible. I have made dishes that are better than others but providing you follow the basics it is likely all will be OK.
In the meantime, I am off to Tesco. I tend to shop late in the evening, when there are least people about.
I can't choose and decide and look if there are other people about. My brain scrambles and I have to walk off.
Tonight I will be making a vegetable biryani. Probably. That's the plan anyway. I need to get spuds, veggies, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, turmeric for this. Minimum. I've got the rice, onion and curry paste, but nothing else!0 -
look forward to it...:beer:0

oh and bombay potatoes
I've always loved them but I never order them because one portion of curry/rice is enough for me. After that I'd have a naan ... and as I very very rarely get through all of that lot, the thought of having another dish would be just wasteful.0 -
Great thread, i'm looking forward to trying some recipes!
I have done a bit of Thai cooking before, which was very yummy, but OH loves indian food, so this will be perfect

Hi
Have just found this thread and a big thankyou to Pobby for all the advice. I cook a basic dal and would love some ideas on variations. Mine is just split peas, onion, spices, green pepper. Very nice but a change would be good.Challenge 2 adults food and household.

this thread is great Pobby, thanks for the recipes so far. I'd just like to ask what can I use in place of coriander in a curry as I really can't stand it0

Reference to the coriander, are you talking about coriander seeds/powder or fresh? I guess it`s best to leave it out but there loads of different spices to use and I hope to introduce them as we go.0

I went out, thought I'd try Asda as I hadn't been there for 6 months and it's bigger.
Took me aaaaages to get the few things on my list.
Spices gave me a hard time though. They are only in 2 places though (Tesco has them in 5 places would you believe!).
They have an ethnic section, which has furren bags/brands. So I picked up some bayleaves, huge bag of dried chillies (for pizzas and chilli-con-carne in the coming weeks), pot of coriander leaf, furren brand of turmeric... but NO cinnamon sticks. Not one. Checked each of the two areas three times, pot by pot. Even delving to the back to see if there was one abandoned. No joy.
Got the veggies. By then it was 9.20pm though - so I thought "s0d it" and bought chips on the way home
I was also lucky enough to spot that they have bags of Sharwoods Naan Bread Mix cheap. Usually 75p/bag, on offer at 2-for-£1. Each bag makes 5 naans. So I will probably make up half a pack at a time as I can't eat 5! But they work out at 10p each. I looked into making my own properly, but the recipes seemed to involve yoghurt, which I never buy.0 -
