Reason:
You can set up your profile for free, but if you want to contact anyone then you have to pay to join.

The result is that nobody contacts anyone, as everyone is sitting on the fence.

I would have to agree with that - also hardly anyone seems to make an effort to make their profile stand out, after you have read that someone likes going to pubs and the cinema for the one hundredth time you start losing the will to live..

Personally, I didn't get on with Dating Direct or Lycos at all - whereas with Guardian Soulmates, Love and Friends and Natural Friends I found it much easier to find people with whom I had something in common.

My advice for anyone thinking of doing internet dating is:

• Yes it can look expensive but a £20 monthly subscription is the same cost as 2 drinks on each Saturday night in the month if you go out looking to meet someone in bars/clubs.
• Sign up for short subscriptions initially until you get a feel for the whole thing and what sites suit you etc.
• Don’t put all your eggs in one basket on the dating front. If you try internet dating then keep your real world social activities going at the same time. Create as many chances to meet people as possible.
• Don’t let the safety aspect put you off. It is very important however if you take the right precautions than it is just as safe as any other form of dating. Out in the ‘real world’ unsavoury people exist too but that wouldn’t stop you going pubbing or clubbing right?? Just be sensible……….
• Go for it!!!!

why waste money and time on dating sites....just get some courage and start chatting to people on the street, supermarkets, basically everywhere. It doesnt have to be 'will you meet me for a coffee' within first 10 secs of talking to them but you can work up to that if it works. Plus its much more romantic in theory!

This means that if you send someone to DIY-Dating, they create a site then someone joins their site and upgrades for the minimum £9.95 - you get £1. If 10 people upgrade you'll get £10. If you refer 10 people, and they each set a site up, and they all get 10 upgrades each - you'll get a minimum of £100
