Must we have such an alarmist thread title?
We all accept it's inevitable... no sense getting people worked up when it hasn't happened yet.

Not my original title, the tread has been merged with a later thread and this title now shows as mine!

  • Let me add my two penn'orth!
I am a buyer only, and have a feedback of 350 with 99.7% pos, one neutral and over 400 pos no negative. The biggest danger to me on eBay is PAYPAL.
Once I paid over 370 pounds out in one day via my verified credit card for items to my own confirmed home address, various shopping like Brita water filters, sellotape, batteries the like, over 17 small items.
All arrived in 5 days, bar 2 which came later. The postage was a rip-off on about 3 items and I posted this fact on the coloured stars available when u leave your feedback. I know post includes say petrol to get to PO plus stamps, printing and packaging so I know it will be more than the value of the stamps but some twit sellers use high costs to subsidize a headline LOW price in the listing to attract buyers, a practice I thought Ebay was stopping years ago!
Anyway, back to my story, 6 days after these purchases, Paypal decided my multi-purchase buying was 'suspicious' and restricted my account!
I had 17 sellers saying I had the items, or they'd despatched them, and paypoo had frozen their payment! I said to them SORRY NO I'M NOT REPAYING YOU, I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG, YOU HAVE NEITHER, YOU SENT MY STUFF TO MY CONFIRMED ADDRESS!
The thing is, PAYPOO asked me to fax statements, passport, licence utility bill to derestrict my account. I told them I'm NOT faxing everything needed to clone my ID outside the country, go to hell, I have the goods purchased honestly with my legitimate credit card and I'm happy, you're ripping 17 innocent sellers off.
The problem is, now the eBay system (being as it's integrated so well with Paypoo) has the items unmarked as 'payment sent'. The sellers, 14 of them understood knowing how bad paypoo is, but 3 issued strikes for non-payment, so i was suspended. I immediately appealed, telling Ebay it was down to THEIR paypoo, and explained that the sellers in some cases had e-mailed to say they would NOT issue strikes, but were only doing so to get fees back (the rest either didn't bother with me or we 'mutually agreed not to complete the transaction' so they could instantly get their fees back and I'd keep the goods. Most had already left me pos feedback and were terrified I'd respond with negative if they insisted I sent the goods back I reckon!
Ebay immediately lifted my suspension when I sent copies of the 3 sellers' e-mails to me saying they agreed not to issue non-payment strikes.
Anyway, paypal refunded my account the 370 pounds eventually after they 'completed their investigations' and I have it frozen for 6 months in case I initiate any chargebacks via my card. Of course, having got the goods I wouldn't be dishonest and do that, but after 180 days I can register a bank account and WITHDRAW the £370! So in 3 months or so I have a nice bit of unexpected cash coming in, and in the meantime am enjoying 370 pounds worth of therefore free goods AND still have an Ebay account of good standing and near 100% pos feedback!!
All I can say is thanks paypoo for your beneficial stupidity and paranoia and to teh understanding sellers for making Ebay such a great place for buyers.

I tend to agree Fay, I think once ebay have sorted out the problems with ebay Australia and know they can make 'paypal only' work it will only be a matter of time before we get it here.It might not be this year, but I think it will happen. Even if they don't force it through for a while how many buyers realistically use a cheque book or bank transfer when every single auction now has paypal as an option.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission are likely to be making their ruling this week on the matter.

Oh well, are any other part time sellers thinking that the time has come to move on to other methods?

You mean you left the sellers poor feedback for a P&P price you agreed to before you purchased!

All prices including P&P are displayed when viewing the item or in list views, so it is nothing to do with 'headline price', I mean even complete morons can add item price to P&P, can't you?

The reason is that sellers dont pay eBay final Value fees on P&P so it means everyone pays less to eBay if the maximum costs is paid via P&P. Idiots like you are just helping eBay extract more money from everyone...

If sellers want to try and get clever by fee avoidance then they need to be prepared to take the hit on their stars. Stars are there for a reason, yes we agree to pay before hand but if we are being ripped off why not reflect that by leaving a 3* instead of say a 4*?

I think paypal only may already be happening!!

Listed on Saturday 13 items to upload to ebay. I tried to do it last night but didn't have much time when an error message appeared. Tried again tonight and I've got the following message:

Error; you need to accept paypal as a payment method for this listing

I don't like paypal since I think the charges are far to high particularly for items which only sell for a few pound hence I rely on cheque/PO. Call me old fashionedhappy.gif. I'd much rather go to the trouble of banking the cheque and keeping the money myself.

Frustrating or what particularly since I'd gone to the trouble to list the items when I was particuarly demotivated....

In response to other comments when you sell on ebay you need to cover your charges. Clearly the paypal charges are now going to have to be factored in particularly for low value items.

Paypal has to be one the one payment options on all listings now, but it is the only option in certain categories - some Health & beauty, Consumer Electronics, Mobile Phones, MP3 players etc.
