    Hi Magpie,

Yep - the flowers and fruit look like toms to me too. Looks very healthy even if it is an imposter! Check out this website tomatogrowers.com. They sell seeds etc but have a fantastic gallery of tom pictures and the variety name. You might be able to identify it there although it will probably be easier once the fruits have grown.

    All the best,
    Chaz

It's one of the many species of solanum, which include tomatoes, potatoes, aubergine and some less tasty, and possibly dangerous, relatives like deadly nightshade. Which it is I can't be sure, but be vary careful what you eat!

    Gosh thats scary!!
  • Agree with madmum33. The leaves look more like potato than tomato and the fruits from potato plants can be nasty- contain solanine, a poison. I won't eat anything off the plant unless you get a positive id that its not nasty.

I don't think potato fruit will turn red but could be wrong?

I'd get in touch with the company that supplied those seeds; to make them aware that instead of edible aubergines they might be supplying non-edibles.

I agree. A gardening friend admiring my squash plants told me about one time he got some kind of visually attractive but sadly inedible gourd instead of the turks turbans he was expecting! But at least gourds aren't poisonous (I don't think)... most members of the solunum family are less than friendly.

Looks like something from Brassica family to me too....

The plant on the right is edible too. Its a Nasturtium also known as Indian cress. You can eat both the leaves and the wonderfully bright flowers. Felt a bit strange the first time I tried eating a flower but it is really good!! Once you've got them in your garden they spread like wildfire....so you might as well make good use....

Hi, can any of you greenfingered people help with this?
I have been given some seeds, and I just dont know what it is, im quite interested to find out, but also have a concern if it may be poisonous. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, then I can do a bit more research with a name!

I hope its OK to do it as a link, I tried to load the image with the URL but it didnt work, the link will take you to the photo:

    Hope someone can help!!

PS the person who gave me the seeds never knew what they were either
  • Thanks all. I already know about the Nasturtiums as they are a variety I planted. I certainly didn't plant any vegetables though. Maybe I'll just leave it for a bit to see what it will grow into.
