Should she return the engagment ring?

A friend of mine has just broken up from his fianc! after an engagement of six months or so.

There was no infedility on either side, but he just felt that she wasn't right for him.

She is refusing now to return the £8k ring, as she says it was a gift.

Does he have any legal right to the ring, or should he just write it off ??

Thanks all

Yes traditionally she should return it.

I can understand why she may not want to though.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • Apparently, the law is now that she can keep it unless it's of family significance

However, if she's got any bone of decency in her, she should give it back

I think it is hers, it was a gift from him to her, it is up to her want she does with it.

Morally I think she should give it back.

    BUT

If that was me , I would sell it and use the money for something more useful!! but that is me!;)

As he finished with her, I think she should keep it and sell it, then buy something really good.

£8,000 is a hell of a lot of money to spend, if she was the wrong person to get engaged to.

What did he expect!! Must have too much money, otherwise he should have made an excuse to lay hands on it before telling her it was off.........very ungentlemanly I know!

If someone broke up with me they wouldn't stand a chance of getting the ring back - but thats just me ;)

Does seem like an expensive ring :(

    She should give it back.

And next time, he should go to H Samuels ;)

  • When did this tradition change?

It was always accepted that if the engagement was broken, the lady keeps the ring. Unless YOU ain't no gentleman....

Ask Zsa Zsa Gabor! But seriously...

"In the United Kingdom, the gift of an engagement ring is presumed to be an absolute gift to the fiancee. This presumption may be rebutted however by proving that the ring was given on condition (express or implied) that it must be returned if the marriage did not take place, for whatever reason. This was decided in the case Jacobs v Davis [1917]"

If he's doing the splitting up he's got a cheek asking for it back!
