I'd quite like one to make proper chicken kievs, however, I just can't bring myself to a.) buy another piece of kitchen equipment b.) ignore all the fried food warnings! There is a "healthy" version you can buy, which uses less fat and rotates the frying basket, probably expensive though!
  • TBH, if I were you, I would just use a pan with some oil in it. We used to use a fryer for chips as they do taste better but I hate the smell of the house for the next couple of days and it makes your clothes smell too.

Also, with the price of oil as it is, wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a large portion of chips from the chippy for £1.25????

We use oven chips now and as long as we get decent ones, they taste fine. Infact, tonight we have had leftover back bacon, FR Egg and Oven chips for dinner.

You don't need a deep fat fryer for fantastic home made chips. Try this method before you buy one.

Peel & cut potatoes into chips as usual. Bring pan of salted water to boil and boil chips for 2 minutes. Drain then add a tablespoon of olive oil to the pan. Give a good shake to coat the chips then tip onto a baking tray and put in a hot oven. (use baking parchment or a non stick liner to help stop them sticking. Cook for about 15 - 20 mins till done.

Healthier and just as tasty in my opinion!

    Hi Burp

I bought a deep fat fryer recently in Asda for £12.70 (their smart price one). I make chips maximum of once a week and it is much quicker than making them in the oven (which i did previously). You can drain them well in the basket and them put in a dish with kitchen roll before serving them so it soaks up most of the excess fat. The oil lasts for ages so personally i think it is much cheaper than buying bags of oven chips (not that i did that mind you). Don't forget if you cut the potatoes fairly big they don't soak up so much fat anyway. A little bit of what you fancy eh ;)

I just make mine in a saucepan.

Never fill with more than a third of oil,
wash and pat dry potatoes before adding them.
Drain them on a plate with kitchen paper.
When the oil is cold drain back into the container.

Keep a constant eye on the saucepan, take off the heat immediately you finish cooking.

Most of the time I coat the cut up potatoes in oil and cook in the oven on a baking tray.

  • Did anyone see the item on a recent Watchdog programme about the machine for making healthy chips. Quite a few people have complained about them going on fire.

I had a very bizarre moment with a NHS nutritionist who was sitting telling me to go out and buy a deep fat fryer to make proper chips! Not what you expect to hear.

I had a little girl I was looking to fatten up a wee bit :)
