I have a small one that I cleaned thoroughly about 6 years ago and put in the cupboard and it has not seen the light of day since .I rarely eat chips anyway and it was only used when my late husband was alive as he liked them .I also ditched my big frying pans and make do with two small omelette ones. That way I don't eat too much fried food. I uusually have scrambled eggs now instead of fried, and only cook bacon or mushrooms in the small pans

Exactly - you can see my point!! But I want one to use occassionally, or would it get all very uncontrollable and turn me into a huge lardy bum!!

I can vouch for the fact that having a deep fat fryer does not give you a huge @ss:)

I bought one a few months ago. We use ours for chips (about once every 2-3 weeks) fish puffs (about once every 2 months) and very very occasionally doughnuts - when the children want to cook them.

It is useful but not often used, it depends on how much space you have and how often you'd use it whether it is worth it or not.

Well, Thanks for all the replies. It's answered my question - I would only do chips very occasionally and not much else so is not really worth it. I do feel I'm missing out a bit as I hate fish shop and oven chips but hm potato wedges are just as good! My little one has never had anything fried yet and maybe I should keep quiet on the chip front until she's a little older and wised up to it!!! :-)

:D Over a year since I got rid of mine (as you can see above) - not really bothered me, can't believe it's been so long!!! :D

Deep fat fried chips are definitely better than oven ones but hey ho, I got rid and never looked back :D

OH made battered fish couple of weeks ago, it was gorgeous.
Also i did some samosas and i cannot imagine doing either of those any other way.
My neighbours had a chip pan fire a couple of days ago so it is a reminder that on the possibly rare occasions when you need to deep fry something, a deep fat fryer is the only thing for the job.

I've got one of those big posh ones you see Nigella using. I used it a few times to make pakoras but it has lived in the roof for the last few years.

It was easy and safe to use and the results were brilliant but my problem was what to do with all the oil after you've fried in it ? It needed about 3 litres in it before you could fry. How many times can it be reused and how do you store it and dispose of it ?

I don't like reusing oil, even once. When it's been used twice, I want to throw it away. I've had fryers over the years but not had one for a couple of years for the same reasons as other anti-fryers who have posted. I do like chips though! That's the other problem - I like chips but only once every week or two which means you've got that oil hanging around. I am lusting after an Actifry now but put off by mixed reviews, the fact it's not suitable for a large family - and the price!
