  • TBH, if I were you, I would just use a pan with some oil in it. We used to use a fryer for chips as they do taste better but I hate the smell of the house for the next couple of days and it makes your clothes smell too.

Also, with the price of oil as it is, wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a large portion of chips from the chippy for £1.25????

I agree... the smell is grim - on clothes, hair, fabrics and in the air... yuck!

I vote for fish n chip shop chips too... or hm potato wedges
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

I have a mini fryer, bought with £10 in £strecher. It's enough for the two of us just to have a taste of chips , not eating like mad on a huge portion. And it take just a small quantity of oil.

i read the other day in the local paper about a man, and he had the oven on, but a pan with oil in on top, the hob was turned off, but because the man had the oven on, its caused the chip pan to catch fire

We have an actifry, its great.Just chip the potatoes and add a tbsp of any oil.The chips are only 4% fat and you can cook lots of things in it.There is a thread somewhere about it.

we had one in December, in February in went bang - twice and that was it. It went back to Comet and I was given a full refund without a quibble. Then a friend gave me the link to the Watchdog report

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2008/11/chip_pans_up_in_smoke.html

We were lucky there was no fire and no smoke.

I only use my fryer every once in a while, probably no more than once a month but I can't get rid of it cos there is nothing better than chips with fried egg and bread and butter! Plus after doing scampi in the deep fat fryer there is no way I could have them any other way now!

I had one when we were first married. We were good to start off with - chips once a week and that was it. Then other things started going in. Then we had chips with everything....

Perhaps I have more willpower now. We do have so many surprise visitors at mealtimes. I'm off to look on Freecycle.

I still have the scars on my body from boiling fat from a chip fryer - I didn't have a fire - the handle snapped and I was splashed from head to toe . Three months off work and a lot of pain, I wouldn't want anyone else to suffer an accident like that.

I used to have a deep fat fryer, and I applud all of you who can only use it once a fortnight! I started using mine almost daily and the weight I put on

Great item though im always considering getting another, not just for chips, but for onion rings, spring rolls, bhajis and other deep fried delights :)

One thing I will say is keep it well away from your tumble dryer if any lint gets in it- its a disaster! They are a bu**er to clean as well as I remember.

I considered getting an actifry but was put off by the cost and delicate fried things like won tons might get a bit *battered* (no pun intended)

You can clean the oil after use, by pouring the used oil through a coffee filter once its cooled. Dont do as I did once and try to tip out the oil before it was cooled into a glass jar- the jar shattered and the boiling oil went all over me
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I got rid of mine years ago, they smell awful.

I either do my own in the oven with spray oil or drizzled olive oil or buy oven chips.

I bought one from tv channel some time back as you can put the container in dishwasher. I alway strain the oil when cold and put in back in bottle which I keep just for frying. Hardly any cleaning on these type and you can see through glass panel how the chips are cooking.
