Deep Fat Fryer

Thinking of Purchasing a Deep Fat Fryer, so we can have Home made chips etc at Home. Any suggestions on what to buy, it will be for just me and my Husband. Thanks

Whichever one you buy make sure it's one where the pan lifts out for separate cleaning. Cleaning my all in one piece thing was a nightmare.

  • Funny you say that squeaky, I have one of those stainless steel ones that is a separate sides, pan, lid and heater and it is an absolute cow to keep looking decent. It cost the thick end of £100 a few years back and it has been so close to going in a skip on numerous occasions, the main problem is that the element control box is virtually uncleanable and gets "hanging" with gelatinised oil. I would go back to a plastic one with a sealed lid the moment this one pegs out.

  • Yup! :D

A deep pan, a wire scoop and a bottle of oil ;)

Seriously though, would you use a fryer often enough to warrant spending all that money on one? If so then fine, and obviously it's your choice. I had one many years ago and to be honest, as Squeaky says, they're a royal pain in the bum to clean!

I rarely deep fry anything anyway these days, and on the odd occasion I do (maybe once every few months) I just pour some oil into a large saucepan or wok and cook in that. Much easier to clean afterwards too ;)

We wouldn't use it everyday but think we would get our monies worth. I'm a Coeliac so can't nip to the chippy when ever i fancy so this would be a good substitute, and would hopefully give me a few more options food wise.
  • I got several years use out of an earlier incarnation of one of these, it was easy to clean too :D

I worked out that chips from the chippy cost me best part of a quid.

Potatoes cost me pennies and half a bottle of oil to fry them in is 30p (ish). Since I only deep fry once in a blue moon and seldom fry anything else with more than a tbsp of oil, if any, it's sad to say that most of that oil oxidises before it gets used up and so gets binned.

But I think at thirty five (ish) pence per time a couple or three times per year it would take me years to have spent enough to have warranted buying a fryer. By that many years (if I bought one today) the thing would as likely conked out anyway... :)

Edit: And my chips are way nicer than the chippy's. :D

  • i saw a good one in the lakeland brochure the other day. it was £45 but haven't checked if it's available elsewhere cheaper. the thing i liked about it was it had a removable inside that could be put in the dishwasher, and it drained and stored the oil so you could clean after every use. can't remember if it was morphy richards or tefal

  • Well Ive had 2 and just binned the second-not a lot wrong with it but even with the full take it apart facility it was a pain to clean-cluttered up the worktop and gathered dust. Swear I will never bother again! Just use a deep saucepan with a chip basket if its just 2 of you and only occassional use. Couldnt bear the smell either-yuk/ There are lots of chips/oven chips which only contain potatoes and oil-not difficult to buy. I just get oven chips now. Iceland Good Choice are juut potatoes and vegetable oil-whereas Aunt bessies are coated in flour. You shouldnt have too much difficulty getting unadulterated chips.

I won't buy one- because if I did I wouldn't be able to stop myself eating chips every day. Within a couple of months I reckon I'd have put on a stone and graduated to deep fried mars bars as I slowly and surely accelerated towards an obese early death!

That and I'd never clean it.
