thinking of going to egypt in couple of years, we like to plan ahead a bit:rolleyes: with our 3 kids they will be aged 12, 11 and 5.
Read a bit on here about upset tummies, main concern would be my eldest who has diabetes, how would he manage in regards to the heat and if he got an upset tummy.
also would the 5 year old be too young, the elder 2 would love it as they are really into egypt stuff just now
also where is the best area to stay with kids?
Thanks

I have taken my kids to egypt, we went to taba in august (yes, the hottest time of the year) and we had no probs (but they are used to going to hot places), we stayed in the intercontinental, the pools were really geared up for kids and they had a great toddler pool which was covered
my kids were 7 and 9 at the time of going, we didn't get ill but then we never really do
as for where you want to go, this all depends on what you are looking for, if you just want to sit on a beach or besides the pool then why go all the way to egypt? if you want some culture and history then the beach resorts are some way away.
you could go to luxor and get a nice resort hotel, that way you have the sights on your doorstep with the pool and activites that you may want too0 -
All the rooms will have air conditioning so if any of them do get sick it will be very easy to keep them cool, but one of you two adults may have to forsake fun to stay inside with them
My partner did get an upset tum but we were prepared with rehydrating salts (from the UK), bottled water and
painkillers
FOR GODS SAKE take ALL medication you could possibly think of needing with you because the pharmacies over there will be useless. We took:
rehydrating salts
antacids/rennie type things
wind relief
stool softeners
ibuprofen gel + tablets
paracetamol
athletes foot cream
bazuka in case we got a verucca
plasters/first aid kit
witch doctor gel in case of bites
aftersun gel
And I am sure with kids there'll be more you'll need.
We found we could get pharmacy own brand/generics very cheaply, the only thing I bothered splashing out on was daktarin because I knew that worked for me. You won't regret it.
This was after my experience when I did get athletes foot on the 3rd day of my week long holiday, the woman in the pharmacy tried to give me an antibiotic cream but athletes foot is a fungal infection so that would have been no good but she insisted it was right so I had to suffer for 4 days of my hol
I've been to the Hyatt Regency in Taba which I would say is very child friendly and the sea is warm without huge temperatures. I've also been to Marsa Alam which I don't think I'd recommend for kids as the area isn't very developed and it is just literally the hotels and beaches. It's further South (not on the Sinai peninsula) so is hotter but the sea is cooler. Marsa is also where my partner got a tummy upset. We stayed at the hotel Calimera Habiba there.
The wildlife in Marsa Alam was amazing, first time I went I saw a dugong, and 2nd time turtles too. Also many fish etc round the reefs. Also baby sharks.
For night life and a bigger range of activities you might want to play safe and stick with Sharm el Sheikh.
Bear in mind Sharm + Marsa + Taba are all 4-5 hr coach trip to Cairo each way. Not good for kids. If you want to do pyramids/history a Nile cruise or resort in Luxor might be better for you.Kavanne

thanks for the info, kids want to see the pyramids and hubby wants to see cairo museum, so luxor mabe better suited
we dont really like lying about on the beach, we like to see history and culture
any good child friendly places to stay in luxor then?
thanks0 -
I've not (yet) been there myself, maybe tripadvisor.com can help?
I would also like to hear some luxor recommendations tooKavanne

cairo is 100kms away from luxor, you can either fly there or take the overnight train or you maybe best suited to get a two centre holiday
as for where to stay, the winter palace is nice, the sonesta george (I think it's called that) is the swish hotel in luxor, check out trip advisor
I would recommend that you get a hotel that is in lucor itself rather than somewhere like the hilton which is out of the town0 -
The Old Winter Palace is nice, as Poe.Tuesday says, but extremely expensive. The New Winter Palace, which tourists are more likely to go to, is being demolished any day now. The Sonesta has building work going on (adding another 3 stories on top) so it can be noisy.
Child friendly hotels are the Karnak Sofitel and the Maritim Jolie Ville. They are both 5 or 6 kms out of town but they have a courtesy bus service into the centre of Luxor and have lots of space and children's facilities. The Hilton has been closed for about 3 years but is reopening in October.
There is lots of information about Luxor on www.luxortraveltips.com including a page on taking children and some hotel reviews. I go to Luxor regularly and always check luxortraveltips before going for the updates.0 -
gosh, a lot has changed there since I was there last0
