Car tax disc not arrived 1 June approaching!

Help! It is 20 mins to midnight and I just came to my mums to get the tax disc hoping it had arrived and nothing! What does this mean? Can I still drive my car? I bought the disc online 2 weeks ago and so surprised it is still not here. The DVLA are closed until Monday so not sure where I stand. Can I just stick the receipt (sent by email with reference number) on my car? Help!

In theory you must not drive your can on public roads. You're not guilty of driving without one though as you do have 1. You would be guilty of failing to display it though. Automatic checks done by police cameras and DVLA enforcement cameras wouldn't be a problem of course.

In reality they give a period of around a fortnight grace and it would be very surprising if 1 they bothered in that time and 2 would do anything under the specific circumstances once explained!

    I concur with 1882.

But I'd call DVLA first thing Monday to try get it delivered ASAP.

Technically, it's an offense because of some now redundant law that was created before they had a way of checking road tax automatically. If the law was rewritten I think the requirement to display would probably be removed.

I wouldn't worry about it. You've got almost zero chance of anything happening.

You also risk £1000 fine for not updating your address with DVLA I believe. You're supposed to call a certain number if it does not arrive in a certain amount of time.

It depends on circumstances, for many years my car was registered over 100 miles away as that was my home address but insured at my current address, as that was where it was normally stored.

I didn't see the need or the point of law which insisted I kept changing my documents, the police did insist once that my DL should have it's address changed, but I argued my point and the cop agreed.

If the OP is a student then I'd say the car should be registered to parents home but insurance should state where the car is normally stored.

By the way OP, the police shouldn't bother you for at least 7 days, but I've heard it takes 28 days for them to do anything but that is off the record.

If the OP has paid, why would the police bother them? The only checks they'll do is against the DVLA database which will show the car as being taxed. If the OP hasn't paid then it's an automatic fine through the post.

Car parked on the road without a valid tax disc is liable for a fine
