Advice on Potty training
Comments

My DS did this when it was a novelty. He's not potty trained yet, but he uses it when naked. And he liked to watch tv, or read books or even play with his cars whilst on the potty. It passed, like everything else.:wall:0

~Perfectly normal..
For my oldest girl we ended up with 3 potties.. one for her, one for Baddit and one for the BlimBlam bay... only DD1 ever managed to use the potty effectively!
it might be easier if you were to keep him home for a week or so and just let him be naked below the waist I did mine this way and other than 2 who had issues with bladder problems it was very effective and they were trained in a matter of days.
I found mine all needed to pee about 15-20 minutes after a drink of juice so would catch them then and sit them on the potty.. once they used it once and got a treat (a chocolate button.. just one.. ) and we did the 'peepee' dance a few times they very soon cottoned on what they were supposed to do.
DD5 I was waiting until the easter after she was 2.. as I was too busy at christmas.. and she decided herself she was potty trained about 3 weeks before..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
My DD used to need to pee as soo as her hands touched water.
I'd run a sink of water and put her hands in it, then, when she started to pee I'd pick her up and put her onto the toilet...worked a treatStarted PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

Thanks for the replies everyone, it's reassuring to know i'm not the only one! He's wee'ing and then telling me straight afterwards at the minute....is that a good thing and when do they start to realise beforehand? I'm still putting him on the potty on these occasions and he does know that the wee should go in the toilet because he tells me.
Should I be trying him at certain times of the day then? I'm not sitting him on regularly at the minute, maybe that's where i'm going wrong?
Me and OH are both working from monday so he really does have to go to nursery unfortunately....they are being great with him there though. Are there any other parents who co-trained when their child was at nursery and how did they cope?
Sorry for all the questions i'm getting a bit lost with it all...0 -
I think you and the nursery just need to work together and be consistent.. say .. he is sat on the potty for a couple of minutes every half hour..
it might be easier for him to go straight to the toilet TBH.. standing to pee is much more fun.. especially with a pingpong ball to pee on!!
I think when training it is more a case of you recognising when he needs to go rather than him telling you.. He will probably go quiet or still for a few seconds before he wees..
I just drove mine mad asking if they needed to wee every 5 minutes for a few days, so they didn't forget they weren't wearing a nappy lol and we went to try every half hour as well.
I did find pullups useless though as they feel like a nappy it is too easy for them to 'forget' and think it is a nappy rather than pants.
We also chose some big boy/girl pants for when they were using the potty properly.. as added incentive.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Mine went and picked their own big boys/girls pants, so it was like a special event.
I trained mine by putting them in pants and asking them regular if they needed the toilet, then every 20-30 mins, I'd put them on the toilet anyway saying "we'll just see if anything is ready to come out."
It's a bit of a chew on doing it so regular, but if you can devote a few days to potty training, you can get it all over and done with quickly.
A "wee wee sweet" helped, which was a dolly mixture or other small sweet for doing something in the toilet. If you're not keen on sweets use another small snacky food, or a sticker chart or something. Once they were doing it themselves, the sweets were phased out as "well nobody else gets a sweet for going to the toilet do they?"
I've never used a potty as it's easier just training them to use the toilet in the first place and I've not used pull-ups much. They're handy for occasions like travelling in case they are caught short. You can't do much if they suddently yell "I need a wee now!" just as the plane has started to taxi down the runway. In normal day to day life, I found they caused too much confusion. If you wee in nappy pants it doesn't matter, but if you wee in pants you end up uncomfortable which makes them understand better why you need to use the toilet. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Hi all, again thanks for the useful responses. DS has actually told the nursery staff when he needs a wee and has then done something on the toilet there so I think i'm going to abandon the pull ups at home and keep things consistent (OH has only just told me this, he usually drops off and picks him up from nursery).
So maybe i'll just use pull ups for the night time then? As you aren't meant to teian for night until they are dry in the day are you?
Sorry more questions lol :cool:0 -
most of mine were out of bed nappies at the same time.. but it is 'advised' you wait until you have had a couple of dry night before going nappyless to bed.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

My DD was funny when potty training. We would put her in pants & try often but revert to pull ups for the school run etc...she would keep it in all day & go as soon as the pull ups were on (she went 8 hours without going a few times!). So one day I decided to risk the school run & go with pants all day & she did really well.
We also had issues when she moved onto the toilet as she would not go on her own, it took a while but she is great at it all now.0 -
When my son was about 2 and 8 months his nursery approached us to see if we had thought about potty training him - we had been, but not seriously we took the view he would do it when he was ready - he had the potty at home and did all his wees in it but nothing
else
Fast forward a few days and off he goes to nursery in proper pants armed with enough spare pants and trousers for a week lol
There were a couple of accidents but within 4 days he was dry and at night aswell, he took to it that quickly :j
Nursery gave us the final push to actually try it consistenty and it worked - :T0
