... people seem to miss that most modern cars are all horribly overweight and oversized.
Unfortunately very true. It is the conflict between demanding greater crash protection, more equipment in the cars, must have car seats for under 11's (now you need a wider cr to fit them in if you have 3 kids).
Some keen drivers will tell you the pre 2003/2004 models of their cars were better to drive than the now heavy weight latest models.
Then we get sillyness like eliminating the spare wheel because it saves 2g/km of CO2 thus nudging the car into a lower tax braket. We should eliminate bands and have a VED and company car tax charge in terms of pence per g/km so stupid design compromises like this don't happen.

You dont need a crystal ball to know that buying such a vehicle at times like this is mad unless you dont mind paying a fortune on road tax and fuel tax, simpley a little common sence.

Like I have already stated I love how everybody says carnt wait for election but thing is do you really think you will all of a sudden start pay less in taxes if the Tories come into power?

Ok they may stop or lower one type of tax but only to raise it elsewhere, making poor and middle classes people worse off.

I agree that if the Tories get into power they will increase some taxes and reduce others, but at least many many people on this message board are not just sitting back and accepting the inevitable of Brown's tax hikes like you are. They may not get what they want, but at least they are not kowtowing to Brown and his cronies, which it would appear you are, and I applaud them for that.

I don't call it the pious for no reason. I reckon the best fuel economy will come from a small car like a 106. In the midst of all the environmental stuff, people seem to miss that most modern cars are all horribly overweight and oversized.

Have you seen the new small car being produced in India the Tata Nano? It probably won't suit everyones needs but at about £1200 at least it goes back to what Britain had in mind when it first produced the Mini.

Yes, it's an environmental and oil price catastrophe. Now millions more people will have a car on the road because they can. Then their lives will shift from not dependant on a car to travelling and work habits where they are then dependant on a car and it's a load more people locked into the car culture. Queue more congestion....

The same man now owns Land Rover and Jaguar.... oh and Corus the UK steel manufacturer.

whats green about my partners 1996 astra petrol 1.4 that does less mpg than my 2002 diesel citroen c5 2.2 ????? her tax stays at 66£ and mine increases???????

also, arent new cars made from enviromentaly friendly materials than what the old(er) cars are made from???

i read somewhere (think it was the AA website ) that the average car emmits x ammount of co2 per year. the increase in tax on said tested car was 300 odd pounds... the ammount of co2 saved by changing 2 bulbs to energy saving bulbs in your home for a year was the same or near as damn it close as the ammount emmitted by the test car. the cost of the two bulbs??? MAXIMUM of £11, the increase in road tax?? well.... figure it out....

i did have a simple idea once about car tax...

why not implement some sort of MOT related tax band?

when your car goes for mot, its tested on a co2 machine to check its emmissons.... and thats linked to dvla/vosa by the internet so coudnt a part of the test results (eg the emmissons ammount for the vechicle registration) be linked to the dvla for when you tax your car...

simply, low co2 emmiossons, low tax band...
reasonable co2 emmissions, middle tax band..
high co2 emmissons, high tax band.

obviously, there can be bands inbetween the ones i said above...

    sorry about spellings..... :)

Car manufacturers are forced into adding weight into the vehicle with all the safety electronics, clearances under the bonnet for pedestrian impact, crumple zones, safety cages, Tyre pressure warning systems etc so there has to be an off-set somewhere, and in most cases minor weight savings can make all the difference and In most cases, making cars more fuel efficient makes them heavier.

Cars without a spare wheel have fun flat tyres fitted which are not only fitted for weight benefits (no spare wheel + jack) but they are actually safer and you can drive for upto 150 miles at 50mph on a completely flat tyre (You cannot have a blow out as the rims are re-inforced to prevent this) again its safer to drive home and sort your puncture out that sit on the hard shoulder on the Motorway.

On the other hand you can drive your car on standard tyres, risk a blow out on the motorway, sit on the hard shoulder on the M6 and change your wheel, pay more road tax and drive a heavier which will cost more in fuel but I know what my option is for me!

Plus that nice shiny spare alloy wheel in the boot is something that you do pay for in the list price of the car, and its something I have never used in 20 years of driving.

    ;)

    Rip off Britain?

I drive a modest 1.6 ford focus. Registered in 2000.

    1 Oct 1998 – 1 Mar 2001 £101.75 £185.00
    1 Mar 2001 – 4 Oct 2001 £79.75 £145.00 D 163

So I get to pay £185 because it was registered too early. And the government wonder why people complain. Why not simply have a CO2 rule point blank? (My classic 1971 honda is tax exempt so Im quite happy with that. I bet is has a higher CO2 than my car :) )

I actually got that wrong - fuel is the same price, all the rest is greasing Gordons sticky little hands.
