Completely off topic... why am I still a newbie after over 2 years here? Is it because I don't say much? ;)

You're worrying me now! Just checked the S/O and it says first payment is for 23/6/08 and last is for 23/5/09 :) Am intending to change the date (and hopefully the amount!) after the first payment's gone.
Is that an internal payment or external? My internal one offers no end date or control over the payments.

They're too busy looking after my spreadsheets ;)

That's an internal S/O from my Hfx Current A/c to the Hfx Reg Saver - I set it up separately after opening the RS account and had to input the RS account details manually, so I guess it's as if I'd set up a S/O to an external organisation.

Not sure about this - I don't know if you can change your Nominated Account afterwards - you would need to phone Halifax to ask.

    Thx LongTermLurker!

I believe the Web Server was automatically opened when I applied online for the RS. At least I do not remember to have had the option to go for the GS during the online application process.

Reading your reply above, I am now a bit worried that HX does not allow me to open the GS account now and to use this for the 5k deposit and the extra 2% for my RS.

As you said, seems that I have to call HX.

    Cheers,

    DUS

Bizarre - just tried it - if I set up an external payment, I get the extra options - if I set up internal, based on roll number or sort code/account number, I don't get the options

  • After reading this thread I was planning on opening my RS today as oppose to the 1st July as people said it is better to do it now rather than wait.

If I did it today and funded again on 1st July and so on, my 12th payment would hit on 1st May but my anniversary date would be 22 June 2009.

Some recent posts now say payments will be returned etc.

Do I open today and put in 13 payments or wait until 1st July and open then? The reason for 1st July is that is when I pay all my standing orders etc.

And bizarrely for me, I only did it that way because my main Hfx current a/c wasn't included in the drop down list of accounts to set up the S/O from (although my other Hfx current a/c was - odd!), so that may have been a blessing in disguise!

No - open today and pay in 12 payments (last = 1 May 09).Your last payment will then earn interest all the way from 1/5/09 - 21/6/09: = £6000 for nearly 7 weeks. If you start on 1 July, your last payment would be 1 June and then you would close having £6000 for only 4 weeks = less interest.

After 22 June 2009, you can then start a new year with the money you didn't put in on 1 June - does that make sense?

Make your June 09 payment on the 23rd, and then change to 1st of the month from July 09 (if the account is still worthwhile).

If you can't put £500 in now (but can from 1st July), I'd wait until 1st July to start.
  • That longtermlurker, thats very clear. I did this with the old 7% RS but let the 13th payment go in as normal, they didn't return the payment. I will set up my SO to expire after 1st May payment.

Yorkshireboy, going to borrow the money out of my business and then put it back later in the month..
