  • Bit of a dilemma that one isn't it? If they had not been battery hens they wouldnt have needed to be rescued and so forth. Its not quite honest if they are sold as free range in these conditions-a little misleading really.
On the flip side tho it is better than slaughtering them or leaving them caged. The sooner the practice of keeping hens cages is stopped the better. This is hughs aim and that of many others. Ive cut down on eggs so that I buy free range now. I used to buy caged because they are cheaper but now I simply use less eggs so that I can but FR.
Ive been trying to talk DH into keeping chickens and also into rescuing some this way-he hadnt heard of it but now admits its a good idea. Just the kids that are the problem.

    Honeycomb Ice Cream

This is a great recipe for using up whoopsied double cream. You don’t need an ice-cream maker for this. It’s really easy and you can spoon it into a freezer container but I find it easier to put it into a loaf tin lined with cling film then lift it out of the tin and slice off servings. Quite high in calories but its rich and you only need a little bit. My family love it and it’s a favourite treat in our house.

    100g caster sugar
    2tbsp golden syrup
    1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
    568ml double cream
    250ml condensed milk

    Make the honeycomb:
Gently melt sugar & syrup in pan.
Increase heat and simmer until begins to darken and caramelise.
Add bicarbonate of soda, mix briefly and pour onto sheet of baking paper while still frothy.
Leave to cool and set then break up into small pieces.

    Whisk cream until floppy.
Add condensed milk, whisk again until it holds its shape.
    Fold in honeycomb pieces.
Pour into cling film lined loaf tin and freeze overnight

Thank you everyone, for your good vibes concerning Pup's belly:p The Power of Suggestion obviously worked on him, cuz altho he's still a tad dehydrated the vet was pleased with him yesterday. MY tummy turned when 'special diet' was mentioned & the vet came out with four tins of dog food but surprisingly the bill was £26-something. The vet asked what Pup usually has food wise & said it was probably because he has such a good HM variety that he was fairly resistant to whatever caused the troubles this time. So excuse me while I go polish my :A :rotfl: :rotfl:

  • morning all,

had a right laugh at a hen night last night, dinner and dancing, much alcohol and even more giggling.

today i would go out but i really can't be bothered! am at my parents, making fathers day dinner for my dad, and as everything is already here then i feel happy in just staying here and maybe sneaking to the garden for an hour or two and enjoying the sunshine.

Well yesterday was another unofficial NSD, grocery-wise anyway, the other stuff came from different budgets and I managed to get as much as possible in Boots using my £10 voucher I earned on Ipsos and BOGOF's stocking up on bits n bobs. All in all spent £10.41 of my own cash in there, got £27 ish worth of stuff and also bagged 350 extra points on top of the normal and parenting club points. Not bad :) Bought me and DH a nice doughnut as a treat, from treat budget lol.
Been in the kitchen this morning, made cottage pie (from local steak mince that was bulk cooked last week), carrots, peas, onion, tom puree, stock cube and lovely locally tatties. Made a smaller one for DS with less stock. Also made cauli cheese with cauli that was cooked earlier in the week (30p from COOP), some breadcrumbs made with end slices of a Lidl loaf (from freezer- making my own mostly now :) ) and some BOGOF cheese.
Made some BM rolls last night, yummy, and had those for brekkie with sausages that were BOGOF too. Have spme left for lunch and also have frozen a few for another time.
Quite pleased and optimistic we will make our budget even with only £10 or so left!.
_pale_ Only downside is that I seem to have a dodgy tummy bug (don't think its anything to do with what I ate as DS and DH are fine) so will retire to relax now, nowing dinner is under control and tommorrows is defrosting as we speak.
Great to hear all your stories this month.

Have just made onion relish from a thread on here.

    Ingredients -

    2 onions
    Olive oil
    1/2 tsp salt
    bay leaf
    1/4 cup white wine
    1 tsp wholegrain mustard
    1 tsp brown sugar

    Slice onions thinly ,add salt
Saute in olive oil on low until transparent with lid on
Once see through remove lid stir in wine, mustard and sugar
Let liquid evaporate stirring every few minutes
Cook on low for 1- 1 1/2 hrs until brown and sticky
Serve warm or chill in jar then keep 2 months or freeze in ziploc for up to 4 months.

Lovely with cheese on toast or pate, burgers or sausages.

Just watered veg, still really pleased with myself and my versatility in the garden. Will be planting out the tomatoes in a few days as still very small.

Have been given a honeydew melon from my neighbours which we will have for breakfast, and rest for packed lunches Monday a wedge each.

Following Christening today have volunteered to recycle the unused magdalenas by icing and sprinkling them for her daughters (8) birthday party tomorrow, she was going to bin the lot along with a plate of party biscuits and snacky savoury biscuits. All clingfilmed and put in her pantry for tomorrow instead of filed in the bin!!!!!!! No sense = no money!!!!!!!

Yum i'm gonna give that a go, thanks Annelouise.

  • I may just venture into the freezer today to do an inventory while everyone is out. At last there is room in there! Not doing any cooking for it this weekend-I really do need space. Spent loads on nongrocery stuff yesterday but stuff which really couldnt be avoided.
bought a couple of extravagent(for me) items such as gel cushions for bunions-they do feel better! Oh dear-what a treat! Bought the Daily Mail and got the free michael caine dvd and there was an offer on for a half price bar of galaxy with any newspaper so I had that. DD come back from uni with some of the tinned foods Id given her so now Ive got 2 bags of tins and no room for them. Guess Im on strike from shopping next week?(That would be a first)

    Hi Guy's

    Help please...
Major problem this morning as I had 'fitted' in my freshly cooked loaf into the freezer yesterday, not realizing that the door had popped open so major defrost.... Have cooked all of meat ready to re-freeze (sweating now as red hot here and cooker going full blast!:o ) and funnily enough, veg was OK, might have been coz it was really tightly packed and at bottom of freezer, only top stuff seems to have defrosted. Anyway question is - can you re-freeze nann bread, garlic bread and waffles if you cook them first?

I know I needed to defrost freezers but could have done with getting some stuff out first... Mrs M, just looking for your tip on what to put on freezer to help with defrosting next time - was it fabric softener???

The Bees / TQ16 / Angelnikki - I have to agree with Angelnikki on this one. After all, if you are going to use rescued battery hens and re-home them for the eggs, etc you are doing the same as the supermarkets anyway. having worked on a battery farm and seen how they live, if you can give them a decent home for a while, what's the harm? Sorry, rant over...

Have a good weekend, sunny after all eh!
