Ok, we are thinking of planning a charity walk from John O groats to lands End. I was approaching a friend about advice, but she is away on holiday. We obviously need to train and then plan, raise money etc. What do you think is the best way to tackle it?

Blimey, that's a long way, but what a great thing to do! Have you got a particular charity in mind?

Um, I would say you need to figure out how far you expect to walk each day, and you need to be able to do that distance comfortably. For training probably try to walk 4 days a week, three shorter ones during the week and a longer one at the weekend (or whenever's best for you). I'll look out the training plan I've got, which is geared towards the marathon but might help with building up distance. They recommend you do some other kind of exercise on one day as well, maybe swimming or gym just to build up general strength. Make sure you have a rest day every week and take it easy on the couple of weeks before the actual thing.

Make sure you get comfy shoes with enough support - dunno if you're planning roads or countryside, maybe both so you might need some trainers and some walking boots/ shoes. Walking needs different support to running - got some good links on that which I'll also look out for you later. All the usual sporting stuff applies - comfortable clothes that don't rub (we won't talk about my experience with 'pant burn' :o ), water and snacks required, build up your stamina slowly. Oh and get good socks - Sock Shop do some which are made of bamboo fibre and are very soft but also keep your feet cool/ warm as needed.

Popping off home now but be back online later and I'll send you those things - hope that's helpful... and if there's anything else just ask! Oh and if you nip onto the DFW Running thread, cnoelj is a training expert and gives fantastic advice!!

    Catch ya later x

Thanks for that, i was thinking it might take something like that. I also think we need to look at accomodation, safety etc.

Those cakes are amazing and agree with everyone that you could go professional with it. And I would definitely charge your friend. You agreed to make and decorate one cake as a present, so it really is darned cheeky of them to suddenly ask you to do a 3 tier cake!

Yep. There are probably websites with tips from people who've done it before. I guess there are assorted different routes you could take!

The one I used for training plans was http://www.marathonwalking.com
and the Moonwalk one at http://www.walkthewalk.org has good tips on training and footwear.

I'd love to do a long one round the coast of Britain... or the Inca Trail!

Thanks for all your kind words. The cake making is a hobby, and probably one of the reasons i need to shed a few pounds:rolleyes:

Thanks very much for the info on the walks,Squizz. I am going to go into it, researching as much as i possibly can. I did start quite a bit of fell walking a few years ago, and then damaged my knee, not with the walking but with a previous injury. It has always been a long held ambition of mine to do something like that, I think the recent series of Extreme dreams confirmed it all. So i can see where you are coming from on the Inca trail, squizz, amazing. I may never raise enough money or have the time, but i would like to give it a crack.

And on the sales front, another DVD, has been sold..:T so i will be posting that, adding a further £3.50 to the coffers after expenses, and Amazons cut..bum:cool: :j

What else tonight? I have more bids on fleabay, and a few more watchers...ooer missus. but that one i definately won't be counting till the money is in the pot.:rotfl: :rotfl:

Well done to you Lucielle, a very worthwhile cause. I know squizz is busy making her shiney bra, pehaps you could give her some tips?

Are you still walking? Or planning to do anything else?
