I'm not saying ditch capitalist democracy, just that it's sadly not very good at long term strategy.

Churchill said something along the lines of "Capitalism is the worst system except all the others we've tried".

The only way to really change things to to collectively force the politicians and big business to act in our interests (be making it clear their short term interests lie with our long term ones). They're very weak and short-sighted. Brown and Darling constantly prove that with their pandering to headlines continuously. If 10m people said do this or don't do that (or else), they'd have no choice but to listen.

It's easy to get business to act in our interests - make it in their interests too! The only reason Tesco fly string beans half way across the world is because people will buy them. If you disagree with something, vote with your cash.

Getting politicians to do what you want is tougher I admit but I'll come on to that.

As an aside, China is interesting at the mo. I think it was !!!!!! that pointed out they had recently had a planning meeting setting the aims and strategy for the next 10 years. Our shoddy lot couldn't plan 10 days ahead! Now, I'm obviously not suggesting we'd be better off under a communist regime, but it's interesting all the same.

I wonder if china wil crash and burn or if it really is the next superpower in waiting?

China faces big demographic problems. Since the introduction of the One Child policy in 1979 the birth rate has collapsed. Also bear in mind that China has almost no welfare system so children are expected to support their grandparents. This is going to lead to the 4:2:1 problem where 1 child is potentially going to have to support 2 parents and 4 grandparents.

Maybe some dodgy dictator might not be so bad after all.

As you allude to above, democracy is a failed experiment and it's soon going to be time to bring in a real people's Government - government for the people rather than by the people if you will.

I propose modestly that I should lead Britain back to greatness in a benign dictatorship.

It's one of the grimmest TV experiences I ever had - watched it as a kid and it shocked the hell out of me

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

Threads is a truly fantastic work of television

to see a truly horrific thing though, watch the american version of a similar story (The Day After), and be shocked at how terrible it is, compared to threads.

    I've seen that - it's really scary.

Have you read the "Crysalids" by John Wyndum?
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Sorry I think £138 (and $130 for that matter) is gloomy, I don't think it has anything to do with the media? Actually, I think it's more than gloomy - it's all out scary:eek: Don't you think so?
