I told my Shetland ponies I'd be looking for a cart soon as they are getting a bit fat. I though I was joking.

I expected this in about 30 years time. I can't believe how quickly things are going wrong. I suspect that this is just the tip of the iceberg as well.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Funnily enough we're thinking of starting my old mare in harness too, and will probably look at a ride and drive in the near future.

  • If we actually got to the stage where the oil supply dries up or becomes too expensive for most people to run cars etc. I doubt that we will slip gracefully into some happy parody of the 50's.

Riots, complete breakdown of law and order and the general collapse of western civilisation is more likely. Most people simply have no idea how dependent we are on oil.

We should have been making alternative plans for years, but everyone from the Government down is too greedy. I spent many years attempting to get politicians to look at the long term picture, but it was a waste of time. None of them are capable of seeing past the next election.

I'm starting to sound like squatnow so I'll stop there.

There are so many accounts of what is actually happening that it's difficult to fathom what the heck is going on. It's the speculators (perhaps), it's the Saudi's & opec (perhaps) or are we at the peak - the tipping point? Hubbert's peak? Does anyone know? or is it just a spike and this time next year we'll all have forgotten about it?

Anyone got any good tips on surviving a rise in oil? Anyone around in the 70's as an adult?

the oil 'shock' we've experienced recently is actually worse than the 1973 shock, in percentage terms

we've actually been insulated in the uk by our very high taxation

the US is feeling the pinch far more than we are as far as oil prices go
    It's a health benefit ...

The 50s? Oil was cheap in the 50s. Do you mean the 1850s?

Sounds pretty spot on to me though :undecided

Stumbled accross this site the other day - http://zombiehunters.org/forum/ found it all highly amusing; til I started to read between the lines and see what they're really preparing for. Thought 'nah, that end of the world stuff is just for the silly merkins, not us brits'... Hrmph, whatever, I think I need to start stocking the old bomb shelter with food and shotgun shells before the rioting begins...

A couple of years ago I got in touch with the main stream political parties asking them their policies in light of "peak oil".

None of them had a clue and made useless noises about supporting car owners.

The BNP was the only party that had anything about it on their website. (I was looking only for research)

Iceland and Sweden are aiming to become oil free in the next decade or so and I believe we should be weaning ourselves off it.

The first thing any sane government should do is give everyone who wants one an allottment. Get the UK growing it's own fruit and veg again.
