    agghhhh

    More price rises!!!

Think i'm going to move abroad somewhere thats cheaper!! lol...

My Ebico / Scottish Hydro Gas an Electricity has increased from today although after doing a price comparison its going to work out cheaper for me to keep my Gas with Ebico but move my Electricity to British Gas Click Energy 6.

I thought it was a little unusual that it worked out cheaper to take my supply from different companies as it normally works out cheaper for dual fuel!

As far as i was aware Ebico dont charge extra for customers wishing to use a pre payment meter, so they should be the cheapest???

thanks matrix999, I'm just really wary - it's a company I've never heard of until I went on a price comparison site, and then came to check on here... we manage ok on bg but the comparison table came up with over £200 saving if we changed to ebico - but I've also read today that their prices are going up soon, so maybe I should check the table again in a few days?!

With the new round of price rises, which were the highest % increases across gas/elec, they are especially no longer cheap especially for electric, even for pre pay meter users.

For the electricity some have stated it is cheaper for them to goto BG click energy 6, some have stated edf, for myself it is £110 cheaper to goto Scottish Power, all depends on the area / tariff, even for low useage and pre pay meters.

The gas however, is still very marginally cheaper with ebico, but even low to average useage is only approx between £20 and £35 cheaper with ebico than elsewhere, again including pre pay, although some have found it approx £20 cheaper elsewhere, but it is hardly worth the switch.

Ebico, seem to be following / guided by southern rises now, and ebicos mission / statements, i.e originally set up to tackle fuel poverty households / pre pay meters with fair and low prices is beginning to crumble / fail for some, and they have found its now cheaper elsewhere with a big 6 cartel for profit company.

    As of today 02/10/08

Ebico gas is 3.77 kwh inc vat

For electric, check here, as the rates vary from area to area.

    Apparently https://www.energyhelpline.com have updated prices

Just checked mine [I'm with Ebico] and the savings for me are not personally worthwhile switching to possible inferior service and billing clarity, but maybe I have more money than sense?

No need to answer that question BTW:rotfl:

  • I've just had a thought on the ethos of this company. If EVERYBODY who paid by DD and was a medium to high user left (i.e. those that could very probably find a better deal elsewhere), leaving only ultra low users and/or people on pre-payment meters, I'm assuming the company would have to 'up' their prices? I'm sure all the actual billing/cs work is done by their partner companies (Swalec in Wales and SSE elsewhere?) and I'm also sure they will charge Ebico more to service customers who don't pay by DD etc. Thoughts?

Don't know why you are rubbishing Ebico/ They have set the benchmark for good supply with not bad prices.
The multitude of tariffs from the Big 6, is just plain dishonest, so the least you could do is support a company doing somewhere about it.

ebico is still the cheapest for me for the method of billing that i like, quartely billing:) I find all the other energy suppliers too much of a headache to work out and frustrating with all the tiers and standing charges.

staying with ebico for the time being :)

Ebico are a small player and have to buy gas and electricity from one of the big boys( Scottish and Southern Energy), so they are never going to be that much cheaper.
I don't work for either company, but I doubt that Ebico have to buy gas and electricity from SSE just because they use them for customer service. There are between 40 & 50 generating companies in the UK, not all part of the 'big 6'. (The power station with the highest output is independent - Drax*). Similarly, other companies extract or delivery gas. As such there is no reason that Ebico cannot source using these companies as others do, e.g. BG does not own enough power stations to produce enough electricity for their customers so need to buy the extra in.

I agree (got half way through a similar post but got myself confused. The same effect would happen if the proportion of new customers was skewed towards low users/PP customers - as it was likely to be as that is where they are cheaper.

SSE (Scottish & Southern Energy) use 3 brand names (Swalec in Wales, Southern Electric in England & Scottish Hydro in Scotland) but are the same company. I assume you get the local brand to you if you phone Ebico.
How much they charge Ebico depends on exactly what they do for them - is it just call centres, or all the meter stuff, cash collection etc too?

    * I think I'm right here - not too sure on numbers or if Drax is biggest, but it is big
