  • i thought i'd say hello, ive been reading the boards on and off for a few weeks and been picking up some great ideas especially from the os threads. its inspirded me to try hard and become more thrifty. i spent the weekend knitting a scarf for my sisters christmas pressie-i showed it to a friend and she wants one. (i havent knitted in years) i've now started baking again instead of buying bars etc for the kids lunchboxes. and dare i say it my house is starting to look cleaner.
I have lists for christmas and plans for recipies so i hope i fit in here as you are all giving me some great ideas.
Our main reason for wanting to save is we are looking at a £3,000 short fall on our mortgage so we wanted to save for that but have now realised we can do 'capital repayments' to cover this if we want. we paid £1,000 off a couple of weeks ago and got a letter this morning to say because if that payment we now have £6 less a month interest to pay. We are aiming to pay £3 or £4,000 off so the interest goes really low and what we 'over pay' we will get back in 2 1/2 years time when the endowments mature. So os money saving seems at the monent the best way to fit in and get our budget on track. this year im planning my 1st os christmas!

hope thats not bored everyone to sleep.

It does you a world of good to have a splurge (love that word) now and again.

SPLURGE!!! :) Hope you enjoyed that!

I agree! I spent about £70 on a pair of boots about 8 years ago. This was a great extravagance at the time but they were a good brand and so comfortable! I am still wearing them! I have had them rehealed last year and also had to superglue part of one of the soles and I shall be so sad when I have to eventually scrap them because they go with jeans and black trousers and even though they have a one and half inch heel are as comfy as slippers! (I sprained my ankle in 2000 in New York and they were the only footwear I could comfortably [strike]walk[/STRIKE] hobble around in as we did the sightseeing!!!)

So sometimes things that seem expensive at the time are actually Moneysaving and well worth it!

    Evening everyone :hello:

Welcome to all the newbies and oldies :D

I'm sitting here waiting for DH to phone to say that he's on his way home. We're having a stir fry (again ) tonight. I find them so easy and it means that we can bulk it out with loads and loads of veggies to get our 5 a day! The only thing that I cheat on is the stir fry sauce......

I've also got to decide whether I need to tidy up the sitting room tonight OR iron the duvet cover that was washed yesterday. Hmmmm........ or do neither :D

Unfortunately, school wasn't the best place to be today. At morning break, I was called to the office by the head (oh no, what have I done?) to be greeted with the news that the father of a girl in my class died this morning and that she is returning to school tomorrow. The worst thing was that I had to tell my class. I felt dreadful. :(

Anyway, I just need to make myself a cuppa!

    Take care everyone.

  • Big warm welcomes to all newcomers to the Daily Thread - great to see you here!

Well today didn't work out how I thought it would, at all. Around about 10am I began to feel absolutely worn out - really dog tired. :( OH wanted to go into town and browse for batteries, printer ink, greengrocer deals etc. but I just couldn't face it, especially considering today is Chatham's first two-way day (they've turned the one way system back to front) and I really didn't fancy joining the fray. So we didn't go to town and we didn't get to the dump.

However, I spent the afternoon doing my Cash Flow for the remainder of September, through October and into the first week of November - and the good news is that we look like we will be able to make both sets of rent without frantic Ebaying. :T My Dad would be right proud of me, if he could see what I've been up to. :D Additionally, I discovered that we'd been double-charged at the pet shop on Saturday - an extra £11.49 had been taken from my debit card. So I got right onto the bank and they un-allocated the second payment without a qualm. :j Just goes to show how important it is to keep a close eye on what goes out, never mind what comes in!! So I was mighty pleased about that, too. :) Right after that was solved, there was a knock on the door and the Postman handed me my L'Oreal freebie box of hair colour! WOO!! So GOOD things come in threes, as well as bad things!!

So, to celebrate, I made two bacon quiches with wholemeal pastry - one of which is destined for the freezer, to cheer up DS's packed lunches. :)

So tell me, did I redeem myself???
:hello: I'm very well, considering the state I'm in. :hello:

I apologise in advance as this is not going to be an 100% OS post....but Im so ashamed of myself:o ......OH & I went to Bluewater this morning after hospital visit as I had alot of M&S vouchers given for my birthday last week and needed (wanted;) ) a nice outfit for my nephews wedding in a few weeks. Anyway, we popped into Monsoon and I *accidently* bought a new suit costing £195:eek:       ....and if that wasnt bad enough, we went on to M&S and I spent another £235 on 3 skirts, 5 tops and a matching bag....I am a BAD BAD BAD BAD girl:o .....granted the clothes from M&S were mainly (£200)paid for by vouchers but I cant believe I bought the suit. It is a classic one, but I feel so guilty....maybe I should take it back....it does look grand though:rolleyes: The clothes can all be mixed and matched..so have utilised there...but ouch!

Anyway, getting back to OS....still no bread in the BM-will get that on later...promise! DW has been emptied, toilet cleaned and 3 washloads done and dried on the line. OH is doing some DIY in the kitchen and DD is upstairs HW'ing:D .....peace!

Popped into Waitrose on way home..good job we charged the buggy and bought £45 worth of food and it cost us £16 after all the vouchers we had:T

Tootles-Hun we love ya...pleased dont leave us.....your one of the saine ones:rotfl: and we need you to guide us:D

    Hugs peeps.

Wow PP, I'm so envious - I love spending money on clothes and am often ribbed for my constant need to shop - however, you seem to have taken my crown, particularly if you add that little lot to your Next Clearance purchases too - all them coats and jeans. :D I really need to be more OS. :D*dusting off BM and SC* :rotfl:

Hello everyone, another newbie here wanting to say hi today :D

My OS for today - I am swimming in homemade soup. Took another pot to work with me and when I got home I had some very sad looking carrots, half a cabbage and a courgette in the fridge. Rather than bin them I just chopped them up, sweated them off with some butter and misc spices (not exactly sure what I threw in), lobbed in some veg stock, added some frozen peas and when it as soft whizzed the whole lot in the blender. And do you know? It doesn't taste that bad! Mystery curry soup! And when you add the satisfaction of more money saved by not buying butties AND not throwing veg out I feel positively virtuous. Oh! And I am getting my 5 a day.

    *humming happily*

This is ONLY because of MSE and OS in particular, thanks guys for all the inspiration :T
