What should I do with my lovely old Vauxhall Cavalier

Need to get rid of my Vauxhall Cavalier J reg 1991.
No Tax No MOT

I have a Vauxhall Astra reg '52 - Mark 4.
Is there anything I can salvage from the Cavalier for use on the Astra the things that came to mind are the battery and the tyres, not sure whether the tyres are interchangeable on the Astra though.

A guy with a recovery truck has had his eye on it for some time.
Whenever he would drive past he would knock to check whether I wanted to scrap it, on the side of his truck he had written "Banger races":rotfl:
When I spoke to him he offered my £10.

eBay-Sold as scrap?
scrap yard-Legality of driving it there?

All ideas appreciated

Hi SEast Bedfordshire, notice you're in Cheshire so I suppose thats off.

Just been to told on a Vauxhall enthusiasts Forum
the way the scrap prices are at the moment you should be getting anywhere between £100 & £200 for a cavalier on the (scrapyard) weigh bridge.
make sure you take it to a scrapyard though & not a breakers , a breaker will probably only give 30 quid for it.

What do you think of that info?........

Lol. Yes i'm in the scum of the earth Motor Trade.

But buyin/selling 2 & 3 year old cars. Often get faced with old stuff like yours that folk want to PX. Something like that I offer the scrap value. If it's got alloys I'll give more.
To scrap it I'd probably get £75 for it. So £25 for my time/fuel collecting it - if you wre local.
Tho if the tyres are decent I could get £15 per corner. Take the enging/gearbox out and weight them in. Sell the lights for a few quid and break the interior for spares. Leaving the shell to be cruched.

Or if it looked OK enough I'd MOT it. If it passed, I'd use it as a loan car for customers!

Salt of the earth more like. Thanks for the reply

I'd give it to you if you were close enough to make it economical, have a soft spot for MSE'ers.

Without that I suppose I need to find a scrap yard in the local Yellow Pages.
What do I need to bear in mind.
Insurance-Legality of driving it there-Any ideas?
Wheels-I was told that the scrapyard might charge unless I remove these myself

I'd take the 'banger racing' blokes tenner and save a whole load of hassle as he'll just take it away for you. At least it'll have an entertaining end to it's useful life :)

Have anyone in the family looking for a car? Someone just passed their test perhaps - but no money for a car? (But could afford insurance, petrol, road tax etc). If the car has no major problems and is likely to get through the MOT with minimal work, they might be grateful of it. Although I suppose most people would be uncertain about taking on such an old car - but they have no reason to be, especially if it's been well looked after - and you know how well it's been cared for :) At least that way it would be being used by someone.

I've been told if you weigh in an alloy wheel for scrap you can get a tenner per wheel, so £50 if your car has a full set.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.
Am going to deal with it during this week, don't want the neighbours saying my old cars bringing down the value of their property. :p

A poster on the the vauxhallownersnetwork forum says otherwise though to be fair with conditions, so I need to look into that further on the offchance, though I highly doubt it.

Your comment \about the wheels is sort of correct. Most scrappies will knock £5 off per tyre for "disposal reasons"

cavweb may be worth a try too - large number of vauxhall groups out there. Try a local classic car auction - sometimes the prices are good here as people like to speculate.
