Competitions Discussion Thread Part 6

I havent noticed any bad feeling but when I done my first list I got a PM to say id missed loads off and it took me hours and it did make me feel a bit like what was the point?

I would of told them to do the blimming list themself then!

Em im sure you did a fantastic job but as Kipper said before on another post..
Your using your time to benifit others and losing your own comping time..

Ive just had a look over some of the closed Comps Ending Lists...
And for instance.... a 42 inch TV has 500+ Thanks!...
Where are all their opinions in the comps ending?... Just shows they dont bother
to read our discussion... They only come on lurking and using the comps ending

Thats so true. I bet at least half of those 500 thankers are people we've never even heard of plus who else is entering who isn't thanking?. Before the comp ending lists, you wouldn't have got 500 thanks for a comp regardless of what the prize was. It just shows you how many people are entering the comps these days!

I think you are being unfair on the 'lurkers' so to speak. I don't post much on this part of the forum, but i do read the discussions, I'm quite 'new' to these parts and feel like I can't post because its an established 'club' and newbies aren't made to feel that welcome.

I don't see the problem with people wanting to enter comps, the who MSE experience is one of sharing and support, yet this section seems to go against the grain...

Maybe people should stop posting compeitions if they don't seemingly want others to enter them?

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with that. There are always loads of new people who jump right in and start posting and are welcomed. There are others who wait a while before posting. I don't think we're at all unfriendly, and it's not about not wanting people to enter, but as I said yesterday it's about contributing.

I do have a problem with people who never give anything back. I'm not just talking about posting comps, but about answering questions, congratulating people who win, pointing out comps that have closed early, providing answers to some of the trickier comps.

A good example is the Independant comps. They're usually really difficult - especially the last one. Recognizing stills from films, landmarks etc - people who only use the lists never ever contribute there because by the time they come along the answers have already been done, with some people spending hours and hours looking for them. I think it was a few days before we had all the answers on the last one.

If everyone was going through the comps as they were posted as we used to, then a lot more people might be inclined to make a contribution to the forum, which would hopefully make it an even friendlier place without splitting it into 2 groups who rarely meet or chat (list users and non list users)

I think the problem is people coming on, and using the lists people have tried so hard to make without even a thought for how long it's taken - or even making any effort to say anything or contribute.

I never experienced a problem when I first started, everyone was very open and friendly - to be honest things have changed since these lists have come in, some people have got greedy and rude when trying frantically to get all the lists done before they end.

We have no problem with 'lurkers' entering competitions but think they need to do it the old way, in searching through the pages of competitions instead of relying on other people, like we always had to - and also making small contributions.

It's alot more fun, and to be honest I think we're more likely to get more prizes - like many people have said. It's a hobby, not a serious issue here. If people don't like it they can go to 'professional' comping sites.

Everyone does their best to be friendly, if only people start speaking up

No-ones being unfair on the lurkers BUT we're not just going to do all the hard work while the lurkers reap all the benefits. As the others have said, it takes time to post comps, find the answers, report merges etc but they're things that lurkers don't do. We're just handing the comps on a plate to a lot of people.

OK I've just noticed missing posts in this thread

When I went to bed last night, I had read up to page 47 post number 1410 (which is how I keep track of where I am on dicsussion type threads like this & Compers Inn, Puzzler mag etc).

Now I've come online this morning & the last post on the thread is only 1408 but it isn't the post I was up to, it is actually 8 posts after the ginjim one that was the last one I read. Why have posts started disappearing?

I thought it was me writing down the wrong post number a couple of times when it happend over the last couple of days, but after your post princessmoneysaver I was very careful about what I wrote down!

Did Al find a mass delete button he can use on others posts :rotfl: I wonder which ones have gone from this thread

(Edit2: Just looked over at the Compers Inn & that seems to be even worse! I left last night after reading ella's post saying 'Good for you Gwen!' it was number 2247 when I went to bed. This morning it is now post number 2224! Princessmoneysaver's post at 11.50pm is 2232 at the moment. Let's see where that shifts to by later) Anyway, really should have gone 20 mins ago! :eek:

Thought I would post here while it is quiet...

I read the discussion threads but don't tend to post here, not because I have problems with peeps being unfriendly etc, IMHO people here have been very helpful and welcoming. I Just am a shy person when it comes to jumping into threads.:o

As far as the comps ending list goes I have no real thoughts on it, I have been using it to check for any I may have missed, and that seems to be alot as i have not been back to comping for long. But each day I am catching up more and getting the hang of going through the posts. But I appreciate all the hard work that goes into making the lists and I can see why alot of people disagree with it. So on this one I am gonna be a fence sitter:p
Like others said, there are 'other' places people can go to get comps ending info;)

There are always going to be lurkers who take and don't give, but I like to think that karma comes round and bites them on the bum:rotfl:

I try to post comps but usually I am not the first to find them, but when I do, I put them here....I'm not doing it for the thanks, just in the hope that like my signature says....I will get something back in karma

Anyways I have waffled enough......ya see this is why I never post in discussion threads....cos I never make sense when I read it back and I'm always afraid I will look stupid:rotfl:
