Try wiping out with an antibacterial spray and warm water then put half a lemon in a bowl of salt to help keep it smelling fresh

Thanks for the advice. I haven't actually had the pleasure(!) of smelling how bad it is and hope it was male exaggeration when I was told it needed to be thrown out!!

I have a fridge that is built into the units, so I can't pull it out to clean the back.

It has got very stinky recently....I have cleaned it over and over again with "normal" kitchen cleaners. I was wondering if there might be a drain hose at the back or something that was causing a smell.

Do any of you clever OSers have any tips to make it smell fresher?

    Thanks!

    Hi Maggirl,

Have you tried washing the inside with a solution of Bicarb and water, leave to dry with the door open while you have a cuppa.

If that fails, it's possible that something has been spilt and gone under the unit, (milk maybe), that would mean a little more work.

Google how to move built in 'fridge, if you think your up for it, give it a go. Best of luck;) Also try to look behind the plinth cover.

    Hi maggirl,

Try washing down the insides of the fridge with a mild soapy solution and then keep a small dish of bicarbonate of soda in the fridge which should absorb any unpleasant smells.

This thread has more ideas that may help:

My daughter has just bought a second hand fridge freezer from a charity, and it's being delivered today. She knows it has to stand for 24 hours before she can use it, but it will need to be thoroughly cleaned out in any case.

It has been standing in a showroom with the doors closed, so has acquired that lovely mouldy/musty smell inside.

What is the best way to clean it out and get rid of the smell? I am thinking bicarbonate of soda somehow, but not sure exactly what to do with it!

I would make up a bowl of Bicarb and water. I would wipe the inside of the fridge down with some of the solution on a cloth and then leave the bowl with the remainder of the solution in the fridge for a few hours and hopefully this will get rid of the odour.

I keep a small dish of Bicarb crystals in my fridge at all times, I refresh it about every 3 months and have never had a problem with any strong odours.
