Where will you ski next season?

  • Oh Skiing! I've skied in France, Italy, China and the USA and the USA was my favourite (Keystone, Colorado). We would like to ski in Chile and Japan but it will have to wait a while until we are married and have bought a house unfortunately!

I will ski in the Provencal Alps in France over Xmas this year as my BF is French and his family have a chalet in Barcelonette. We are very lucky in this respect as we just keep our skis, boots, clothing etc in the chalet and turn up when the snow is good!

Has anyone ever skied in the Himalayas??

Has anyone else starting thinking about the slopes yet and if so where?

I'll be skiing in Death Valley, California.

Wow... I didn't know you could ski in California! That area certainly seems to have everything ie all year round.

I'm feeling very conservative now having read some of these posts. I've mainly skiied in the Alps, once in the Pyrenees, twice in Aviemore, once in the Auvergne... I think that's about it. Next time - 2010 - I will think wider!

So much for my moneysaving plans!

We're off to Mayrhofen Feb half term - 4th time. We're a group of 4 families, with mid-teen kids, and though Mayrhofen has a rep as a party town, we stay at a Pension linked with, but not in, the main hotel. That way, we get our meals at the hotel, but plenty of sleep back at our rooms - the big main hotel, the Sporthotel, seems to us to be full of noisy, drunken 20somethings, with doors banging all night.

Someone also mentioned price - in school hols France is way more expensive than large parts of Austria, which also influenced our original decision. The ski schools in Mayrhofen are all excellent as well.

I'm not keen on dry ski slopes now but they were invaluable when learning and snow is much easier, so anyone who can ski on plastic will be 'away' when they meet snow. The new 'real snow' slopes like ours in Milton Keynes are something else, though still limiting compared with mountains.

I managed to get a (relatively) good deal in a chalet last year by a) finding a 10% discount on the net and b) booking the flight with easyjet, which was about £80 I think (and that was Feb half term), so it came in at under £700 including ski guiding on a couple of days - oh and forgot to say it was in Chamonix in a luxury chalet with jaccuzi and sauna etc. I am tempted to go back but there are so many more places to go....

I've stayed in Trois Vallees to (Meribel and Coucheval le Praz) and Les Deux Alpes. I like the cruisy big French ski areas but I'm really looking to push myself a bit (as I'm a bit of the lazy side).

    hi Pandora,
I have just booked the same - flights to geneva with easyjet,
    for ski this winter.
We intend to stay in chamonix, so im just wondering where you stayed and who you booked it through?
    any help would be good
    cheers

If the £/€/$ stay as they are at the moment, next year could be the year for going to the US.

Only ever done a couple of days skiing in the US, and I think I would miss the certain je ne sais quoi that the Alps have, but I'm sure you can make up for that with empty slopes and $10 steaks!

We've been to Les Arcs three times now and it's very good. Since it's relatively high, we were able to feel pretty smug about having snow while people poured in from lower resorts. (Also got quite a thrill from seeing it on Top Gear last month!) This year we're thinking about 2 weeks in the USA or Canada, probably 10 days' skiing with the odd rest day. Has anybody any advice?

    Thanks!

Hi jh. I booked with Coldfusion Chalets who were fantastic but not for families.
http://www.coldfusionchalets.co.uk/ I'd thoroughly recommend this company as I had such personal service, including pick up by minibus from the airport and taxi to the slopes. The website I booked through was chaletfinder or at least I quoted 'chaletfinder' on the booking form and got a discount. I've just looked but couldn't find the chalets this year on chaletfinder, though there are an awful lot in Chamonix so I might have missed them.

I'm waiting for Easyjet to release April's flights as I'm going to Verbier at Easter. I could go from Gatwick for £90 but would prefer Luton as it's closer so I'm hoping the flights will be as cheap.

I miss skiing :( No money these days

I have been to Avoriaz, La Thuile, Sestriere (twice), Val Thorens (but only on a day visit), Flaine (twice), La Plagne, another place in France I can't remember, and the best ever was Banff in Canada.

Wonder where my credit card debts came from :o
