How Cheap can a Funeral Be !

  • Both my wife and I have stated in our wills that we wish our bodies to go to medical research, (though my wife wants to keep her eyes for some reason!), and be taken straight from the morgue / hospital or wherever, to the crematorium after the scientists have had their bits. No funeral, certainly NO UNDERTAKERS involved, (saw my own mother ripped off by a "family friend" for Dad's funeral. :(

I don't believe anything has to happen apart from a death certificate and if a few friends want to get together to scatter my remains somewhere nice and go to a pub to drink my health, they are more than welcome. I will after all, be dead and not care what happens.

    :)

Same applies if they don't die in hospital, except it becomes the Council's problem.

It's called a PHF (Public Health Funeral) and the Hospital/Council are legally obliged to provide a funeral, if nobody else can/will.

I went to the funeral of a Great Aunt last week. My Aunt was a great stickler for "doing things the proper way" and tradition. it was obvious that my cousin had planned the event to her taste. There was a cardboard coffin, which in this case looked shoddy, I have no idea why I imagined a coffin to be seamless, but it wasn't. My cousin had painted butterflies over it, and the flowers on the top were a mix of ivy and blackberry plants which were stuck with selotape, all that was missing was my dear Aunt arriving via Yodel, it was awful. At the end of the service we were told to form a line, I assumed we were to file past the coffin but no, we had to write a message on it with a marker pen, rather like a large leaving card, my cousin - always a corporate man - wrote "good luck for the future", I just signed it, but it didn't feel quite right.

We did want an environmentally friendly coffin too, but the undertaker said that it had to be ordered in advance and there was not enough time, we were too upset at the time to argue the point.

Bet a lot of undertakers use this excuse to get people to buy a more expensive coffin.
How much notice can a person have of an upcoming death?
How much notice do they need to order one and why don't they have some in stock?

Thankyou HU Hester. I am at present trying to organize a "funeral". Everyone thinks I am a little strange when I say it will just be myself attending - no hymns readings, life stories or prayers (although we are both Christians). Thankyou again for letting me know I am not the only one. jac.xx p.s. It is NOT just the money.

    I've been Money Tipped!
My husband loves his Land Rover so much that if he goes before me I've said that I'll drive him up to Beachy Head, leave the handbrake off and he can go out (and over) in style :D.

It'll save me getting the banger man out to deal with the Landie as well.
