I've had one - it was fine, not uncomfortable as I was knocked out. The worst bit was drinking all the stuff beforehand - I watched a film to distract me and forced it down!
Good luck - you'll be fine.0 -

Regarding colonoscopies, I have had several, and the last was the worst, not the procedure itself, but coming round. They knocked me out as I was having tubes in both ends, and I don´t react well to anaesthetics. On previous occasions, I found that the worst bit was the anticipation. Yes, it´s undignified having a tube stuck up your bum, and being inflated with air is uncomfortable and makes you want to fart sooooooooooo bad, but the procedure wasn´t that bad, even without sedation.
If itell the doctor about the family history will i def be screened am worried about being 'fobbed' off with her telling me it will just be ibs.
I suffered from ibs many years ago but controlled it with diet etc and this doesn't feel like it did then at all.
I am far too scared to google sypmtoms of bowel cancer but i have been getting severe pain and back ache and i seem to keep getting hot flushes where i get a kind of cold sweat.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
sorry to hijack but i am so worried i have had diarroeah (sp) for getting on for three weeks now but i am so scared it may be bowel cancer am i right in thinking it could be hereditary my maternal grand dad died of bowel cancer when he was 36 and i am 32.
Are you passing any blood in your stools?:smileyheaMagenta0 -
You'll be fine. I am soooo grateful for the screening I have been having for 20 years now-treatment is there when probs are caught early enough and the procedure itslef is over quickly. Must say I am never 'out' during mine-I sit and watch the progress around my gut with interest, rolling over when told!
Same here, I have never been offered any sedation when I have had mine done!:smileyheaMagenta0 -
Got one booked for this thurday (3 days time) for Crohn's. will be my 3rd one but first without sedation (other 2 were private, at £2k each and i finally made it onto NHS. now free, but seem to sacrifice the sedation as anethetists are expensive)
the consultant said they may actually do a rigid sigmoidoscopy not a colonoscopy. the worst part when they stick that tube up is the URGE TO POO!! it really feels like you're actually pooing, its very unnverving. wonder if anyone has ever poo'd on the doctor?! well i've had 2 flexible sigmoidoscopys (as well as 2 colonoscopys) and felt like i was pooing so i guess a rigid sigmoidoscopy feels the same.0 -
Thank you amber sunshine

Oh dear ... beware diagnosis by Google! It´s really easy to imagine you have all sorts of dreadful ailments ... the flushes and cold sweats could well be anxiety, if you have got yourself in a state over this. You really do need to see your doctor, she will take into account your medical history and family history. It could also be colitis, but your doctor needs to diagnose what you do or don´t have, not me, and certainly not google!0 -
Pukkamum, from your posts, you must be worried, but please go and see your GP, if necessary, write down your symptoms and your family history. That may be easier than trying to explain it off the top of your head.
As Sunshine suggests, stay away from google, it's the equivalent of those home medical health books, you can diagnose yourself with allsorts from one of those.

Never had a colonoscopy but have had a laproscopy where you swallow the camera - I was the only person who refused to be sedated because the trip to the hospital coincided with a christmas shopping trip:rotfl: I went shopping immediately after.0

I self-diagnose with mental health problems, I have had everything from bipolar to Aspergers!0

I think people are getting confused with colonoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopies, rigid sigmoidoscopies, proctoscopy etc
All look varying degrees of length up the colon, have varying degrees of discomfort and some don't require sedation/bowel prep0
