It is not that, I am not right confident and I would find it difficult to start again somewhere else.
!!!!!! Phil your not going to gain confidence if you don't do anything about it.

Sadly they say it to everyone my grade not just me. You don't have the right customer experience or cash skills to promoted. What sort of job is there where it is completely closed to moved forward?

    Everyone?

Have you asked your employers what you need to do to get the right customer service experience or cash skills to get promoted?

Have you asked them for the opportunity to gain the right customer service experience or cash skills to get promoted?

Have you told them you are wanting promotion and asked them what you need to do you get it?

Seems to me that a lot of your barriers are based on making illogical generalisations and assumptions; 'completely closed', 'never get a better job', 'experience is pointless'. Until you stop asking 'why can't I...' and start asking 'what can I..., when can I..., how can I...' you will never move forward.

Phil, I understand your job at the library is part-time?

Why don't you see if you can get another part-time job to go with it, (that's as well as your library job, not instead of) preferably in a bookshop but any retail job would give you customer-facing skills and cash skills, and many retail places are open in the evening and of course weekends.

Try Matalan. They seem to have four-hour shifts and are open until 8pm.

Or even some voluntary work in a charity shop .

I could try that. I really do want a more stable job that is more varied than I have now.

Actually, being a librarian is a great career. And it leaves plenty of scope for little side-lines, like being poet laureate. In most libraries, there are more opportunities for training and skill development for assistants and shelf-stackers than you would find in places like supermarkets. And if you feel the need for more education, get a job in a university library. One of the fringe benefits is that you can then study without paying tuition fees.

SP - pack yourself off to college and do some training - they even do management training courses so you can get the job that you want rather than whining about it all day.

No-one is going to stick around offering you advice if you are not prepared to take it on board and you just keep throwing it back in their faces. After reading your postings, I am beginning to think that you are a spotty 13 year old skiving off school and spending time on the internet in the library.

Take what is said on board and get off your bum and do something other than whinging and whining.

You can shadow but then I don't see how you can call that experience when you apply for a job. I have said that I would like a better job there to them a few times and they offer you shadowing to help.

I know I said I was gone from this thread but....

THAT IS THE PERFECT THING TO DO!!!

It's not experience but you have an idea of what to do. You will learn what they do and thus have in essence experience.

NOW GO SHADOW THAT PERSON NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have requested it but then you have to wait for them to sort it out.

You could get the experience when someone is off sick if they let you act up but it is not really allowed for a few days.

that's NOT a fob off phil - they are trying to help you. To give you a better chance of getting the next job by shadowing so you can gain an understanding of what's involved
