floss2 - yeah you can do that with Egg savings and IF savings to the best of my knowledge. I have 12 savings accounts for various different things like car tax, Christmas presents etc.

    Hi Bunny

ING Direct also do this. Amongst others I have a car tax/ins/maintenance savings account and a Xmas for free account that all my quidco, bingo, survey money etc goes into.

I'd be very surprised if you don't get housing benefit so hurry up and apply! You could go on the website entitledto - may give you an idea of what you could expect to get.

    Thanks Tigz and Gem.
How do I go about it then?

I think you have to contact your local council now as the rules changed since I've last done it. Definitely check it on entitledto - that might even know how to apply

I love my ING account, it doesn't pay the best interest but it keeps me super organised, you can have up to 10 separate bits in it and you can change their names to whatever you like; I have stuff like car tax, car maintenance, xmas, water (bill is every 6 months) etc ... I love it !!!

So, Ben, do I just open a basic ING savings account?
And then I can seperate it all?

Yep you just open it and then once you log on you can add more sub-accounts I think, it was ages ago I did it though but I do remember it was dead easy ;):D
I know I could get more interest elsewhere but I love the simplicity of it :D

I've just been on entitled to and it says I should get £30 a week for HB?
And it says I should not have to pay council tax as I get £243 a week CTC? Does that sound right?
I thought you always had to pay council tx, no matter what!?

    All very confusing

The ING accounts sounds good but if you don't decide to go for them there is another way.

I use Microsoft money to create provisions in my cash ISA for different things so all the money is kept together earning me the best interest rate untill I need it but I have set provisions for Holidays, birthdays, christmas, emergencies etc.. You can change the amounts around instantly and when you buy something in a catogory that you have made a provision for you just take that amount off.

You can see at a glance how much you have saved for different things, when you get a credit into that account you just increase the provisons the way you want. Easy peasy :)

(I do have a cashcard for my ISA which makes it easier but if you haven't got one just transfer the amount to your current account) Or do this in your current account which is fine, just you won't get as much interest but if you only have a limited amount to spend anyway then it doesn't make much differance.

Good luck in your new single life Bunny :) I'm a single mum too and its hard work but very rewarding especially at first while you and your EXOH are adjusting, 5 years after my split we get along really well now but it was very tough at the beginning.

No, if you are entitled, there is also Council Tax Benefit.
