Moped Riding on Licence?
Can anyone help??? Im thinking of buying a moped/scooter to save on travel into work (and less hassle!) and im wondering if i can ride it on my car licence without having to complete a CBT course. I passed my car test in 1987 and have looked on DVLA and it states if u pass before 2001 you dont have to take a CBT but it doesnt say what cc thats up too? Its a little confusing and doesnt make itself clear.
I was hoping to buy a 125cc scooter - can i ride it without having to do a CBT...does anyone know????

Hi,
Everyone has to pass a CBT before being able to ride on a public road, you won't be able to get insurance if you haven't done the CBT.
It's only a short course anyway and if you have no experience of riding on public roads (it's not the same as driving) it will certainly stand you in good stead.
Hope that helps.I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

Sorry forgot to say, it makes no difference when you passed your driving test for a car the CBT rule still applies.I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

.....Not everyone HAS to take a CBT, thats what im saying, before a certain date if u passed ur test u DONT need to take it, but what my question was, was what CC does apply?0

this is what it states on DVLA site.....
If you pass a car driving test after 1 February 2001 you will be required to undertake a CBT course before riding a moped on the road unless you already hold a full motorcycle or moped licence.
If you already hold a full car licence, or passed a car test before 1 February 2001, you are not required to take a CBT course before riding a moped but you are encouraged to do so.

I just phoned my local CBT training office. They confirmed the above from dvla, that if u passed car before 2001, you have a moped licence already and therefore dont have to take the cbt test but only up to a 50cc any bigger then do have too take it.0

As far as I'm aware a moped has an engine under 50cc. SO you can ride a 50cc moped without a problem but nothing bigger!0

Dreemgirl, You seem to have answered your own question, luckily you got it correct. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

I got a moped about a year ago to go to and from work on as its much cheaper than the car.
I did not have to do a CBT because I got my licence before 2001 but I decided to do anyway.
If you have never riden a moped on the road I would say then do a CBT. I found it a great help to get your confidence up.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
Some of the kids round here have got mopeds, it appears that most of the fuel is used to generate an irritating loud buzzing noise and very little is used to power the wheels and make them go around. Getting stuck behind one of these pathetic noisy little efforts is very frustrating, I assume they are only 50cc as they are very slow to accelerate and seem to have a top speed of around 26mph.
I am getting bull bars fitted to my car to deal with this nuisance children on their mopeds!!!"We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
The CBT takes a day and can be passed by an untrained monkey anyway - I'd suggest doing it as you don't want to be riding a 50cc piece of crap!0
