we all use it - but is cheaper washing powder as good as a leading brand? does anyone have inside info ie. is any own brand the same as brand
its an expensive item to add to the weekly shopping -
and i hate doing the ironing and finding a mark hasnt washed out first time!
lakeland and other mail order companys do washing balls - priced around 8.00 and reckon thats all you need for months of washing - does anyone have one - do they work>?

as far as i know, the big firms only make washing powder for themselves. alot of supermarket own brands are made by McBrides (i think it is) who supply a lot of own brands in the eu. i asked this question on another forum on the web & as far as i remember this was the general gist of the answers (someone replied who does testing on machines & washing powders). The "good" washing powders eg ariel are so expensive but then if you get the results you want ....... ? I've tried various shops own & branded bios & non bios (my daughter's skin gets affected by a lot of them), & i found Persil to be one of the worst ! but now i'm using daz cos it was on offer & it seems ok - who knows ?! My friend uses tesco colour & says its ok on the kids skin but it still fades the colours
*as far as i remember the tester guy on the forum said he didn't rate the washballs, i've never tried them though0 -
Hi Clare,
We have a recent thread on washing powders that should help so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.
Also have a look at these other threads:

I use Netto`s big box of washing powder 5kg for £1.88 and I mix it with 2 bags of soda crystals costing £1.02 and it lasts me months.I only use about 2-3 tablespoons and all my cothes come out very clean.
I still use FC as I cant get away with the vingear lark.Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0 -
I used to always use the liquid in my washing machine as it was normally on offer or worked out cheaper than the powder.
However last month a huge box of Bold powder was on offer so I decided to buy that instead.
Have now done 3 wash loads using it and I have to say I think I'm a convert back to powder. Despite using less than the recommended amount my clothes feel and smell much cleaner when I use powder and my washing machine doesn't seem to smell musty any more.
Has anyone else noticed the difference between liquids and powders or is it just me??June Grocery Challenge 270.80/250July Grocery Challenge 0/3000 -
I use a non-bio liquid in my machine. I don't think I'd go back to powder, but if I did it would have to be a non-bio and I don't think there is much choice in either powder or liquid form.

yes it does, so double the saving
I don't normally go for the brand names but when they work out cheaper then needs must.
The ultimate test was washing my gym kit. Even though I got all sweaty down the gym and then bunged it back in my gym bag for the rest of the day, when I got it out to put it in the wash it still smelt fresh.
Ive got a jumper on today that was washed in liquid and although I know its clean it just doesn't smell of powder/softener and it doesn't feel freshly washed if that makes sense. Whereas my jeans which are also clean on were washed in powder and they feel as if they've just come off the line even though they were washed two weeks ago
Or maybe I'm just wishful thinking as this box of powder is huge so it will last me months:rotfl:June Grocery Challenge 270.80/250July Grocery Challenge 0/3000
