My sister in Essex asked for some yeast in her local Tesco Extra and was given a large block for no charge.

My Tesco gives me so much I have to freeze most of it. Like the earlier poster, it comes out fine afterwards, although perhaps a bit sluggish. In fact, I've just got some bread in the oven now that I made with frozen fresh yeast :)

    Hi there,
Since reading this thread I have started picking up some fresh yeast each time I go to Tescos. I just ask at the bakery...they will give you 2oz free then it's 20p an oz after that. I just get the free stuff which does a weeks bread!

    I love this website!

rmac if you grow veg, slugs love yeast so it might still work in a slug pub.

HI, I have found some out of date yeast, binned it, now after reading this thread have reclaimed it. Culpepper how do you make a "slug pub"? Is it abit of left over beer put in a saucer with yeast added?

  • Just making a loaf and realised both the yeast (june 09) and dried milk (dec 08) are out of date-they are already in the bread maker but will it be ok to eat? There were no nasties in it, thanks.xx

If it is a 'best before' date rather than a 'use by' date then they won't be harmful but your yeast may not work.

From a food safety POV I'm sure it'll be fine. The only problem you might find is that old yeast sometimes doesn't work as well, so your bread might not rise as much as it usually does. If it comes out totally brick-like then you'll know it was past its best, which is one way of solving the problem! :)

    HTH?

  • Ah i hadn't thought id the yeast not working-i know its been a month or so since i last made a loaf (got out of the habit after having dd-now getting back into old style!!) and it was fine then....i shall wait and see if it rises now then!!

If it is a sealed sachet of quick yeast it should be okay, I've used older dated than that without a problem, might not rise quite as much but should still be edible.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
