Thank you both of you, I didn't end up making bread today and I bought some more yeast whilst I was out just incase I couldn't use the old stuff, but I shall try using the old stuff up first - will definitely use it tomorrow in the pizza dough.

    Thanks again:)
  • My Dove yeast is dated 25/03/2010 and is supposed to be used in two months after opening. Mine has been opened at least 6 months and is still fine. Mind you it has been stored in the fridge.

Oh that is good to know, as it is the Dove in the orange packet that I have bought today as a replacement. Actually thinking about it, I am sure I have bought Dove before and ended up throwing loads of it away cos it has been opened more than 2 months. Is it best to store it in a Lock & Lock box (or similar) in the fridge then?

I think the yeast we are currently using up expired in 2009. (OH found some on special once and stocked up...) We only use it for pizza dough, but it does rise quite well still.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Just mix the yeast with warmed water, if there is foamy head then it still good to be used. Then it means you can use the yeast for both pizza dough and bread =)

And if it doesn't, of course, it won't be any use for either.

Mine is just stored in the door of the fridge and sealed with a clip still in the packet. I was going to open a fresh one and then thought I'd give it a try and found it still worked ok.

    Hi kathie,

I've added your thread to the existing one on using out of date yeast to keep the replies together.

  • I've just asked in my local Asda and the guy gave me a big chunk of it, for free, but said that they weren't supposed to. My colleague brought 4 x 30g chunks from Morrison for 50p.

I just found 6 sachets of fast action dried yeast in the cupboard, it's BBE Oct 2011 will it still work (BM) or should I bin it?

    Thanks
