If the yeast expires at the end of the month it would be best used now or next week at the latest or freeze it? Is that correct?
    Yes, that's correct.

Can anyone please advise where the cheapest place to buy yeast is?
When I have run out, I've bought blocks of fresh yeast from Sainsbury's. Ask at the instore bakery section. It is 99p for 800g although I buy it in packs of 12 x 1kg blocks wholesale for about 65p per kg.

Apparently, if you ask at the bakery dept in tesco, they will give you fresh yeast free. Not tried it myself but someone mentioned it here some months back.

If you don't know whether the yeast is good or not pre prove it. Mix a little with some warm water and a touch of sugar and if it doesn't bubble within 10 minutes you know your little yeast bugs have gone to their maker.

    Yep :)

The cheapest yeast is completely free.

My local asda will give me yeast for free if I ask at the bakery counter, and I understand that most Tesco bakeries do this too.

Morrisons sell it for about 30p. It's in the fridges with the ready to roll pastry and the butter.

Tried that at our local Tesco. Seems they don't have any. Looks like everything comes in ready mixed or part baked and then just finished off on site. May be it's different at other stores. Ours is a regular Tesco store, not one of the huge Tesco extras.
  • Ive still got a packet in my cupboard a good six months out of date. It was a large packet and every time i try it its ok! I used to throw it away but one day I just chanced it and Im still using it up. Seems to be one of the things we can get away with. I like the idea of pre-proving it though.

I asked at the instore bakery in Sainsburys and was charged 16p for 50 grams. I also asked at the nearest Tesco Extra, and was told that they usually give out yeast, but that day they couldn't as they has so little left. This was in Cardiff.

My sister in Essex asked for some yeast in her local Tesco Extra and was given a large block for no charge.

I keep mine in the fridge if it's an open packet ;)
