Air con - worth it?

I'm in the process of buying a brand new Corsa, which doesn't come with air con as standard. It would cost about £800 to add it. Is it worth it? I mean, it's nice to have air con on a hot day, but we don't exactly get many of those, do we?

What are your thoughts?

i wouldnt pay £800 for air con as an extra.
i would only take it if it was a standard feature in the spec i wanted.

    Thanks, goldspanners.

Would having air con in a car add value, when it's time to sell?

I wouldn't buy a car without air con. it's not only hot days where it's useful. it clears a fogged up windscreen quicker than anything ;)

It wont add £800 thats for sure, but i might make it easier to sell if it had it,as the corsa is a popular car with a lot to choose from.

i dont think aircon clears my windscreen any quicker than just using the fan on a high setting.in fact the air con in my focus actually fogs the windscreen a bit before it starts to clear.

Well I drive for a living and I manage fine without a/c fitted

If you plan on keeping the car for a good few years I can't see it adding much to the resale

Also bare in mind you'd use more fuel with a/c on

The using more fuel is only true if you would drive with your windows closed when it is hot. I drive a lot and wouldnt be without it.

I thought it wasted 10% more fuel due to the engine having to work harder to run the A/C. What difference does it make if your windows are open or closed, if the A/C is on it's using more fuel. But that said, I would never buy a car WITHOUT A/C
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

A/c is becoming more and more popular on cars in the Corsa segment. If you plan on reselling the car after 3 years then you may struggle and the dealer will mark your car down significantly more. I had a friend who ordered a MINI Cooper without a/c and it took her 6 months to sell it privately. She got loads of phone calls interested in the call but the crunch was whether there was a/c as she hadn't listed it in the advert. On the MINI she was given part exchange values of about £1-1.5k less than an a/c car and a couple of dealers even refused to make an offer on it.

I think Photome meant if you use the air con rather than opening the windows (opening the windows with the windows open would be a complete waste of time).

I think the additional fuel from the extra drag caused by having the windows open on the motorway would render the a/c more cost effective anyway!
