you should be able to notice the quality because SCART doesn't have the bandwidth required to carry an upscaled/hd picture to your television. It's too much information for it to handle.
you will get what you pay for with a hdmi cable, there are cheap ones like this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-meter-HDMI-cable-gold-plated-free-P-P-WII-Playstation_W0QQitemZ380027727527QQihZ025QQcategoryZ32837QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)that will do the job, but if you will be using it with a hd dvd player then you would want to get a better quality one because the quality would be noticeable.
i recommend this one, i have it and it works a treat: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/1112312/Linx-2-4m-Luxury-24k-Gold-Plated-HDMI-Cable/Product.html0 -

The Nintendo Wii does not support HD, therefore does not support the use of a HDMI cable. You can technically improve the picture by using higher quality cabling but it is unlikely you will notice any difference.0

Clarkz, I question your recommendation to purchase 'premium' HDMI cables without providing any additional information.DaveC [http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742966]
The HDMI Licensing group only allow the HDMI logo to be used on products that have passed compliance testing. Testing is carried out on transmitting devices, receiving devices and cables.
If a product carries the logo it should inter-operate perfectly with other devices carrying the logo. If you get a cable with the HDMI logo and it doesn't work....the cable is faulty. Check to see if it states 1080p compatibility on the packaging though.
If you look at HDMI cables you'll probably find that the cheaper cables (that have the logo) are only available upto a certain length. In excess of 5m you should expect to pay a bit more but I still think the QED 65quid cables are a joke.
As far as comparability between v1.1, v1.2 and v1.3 goes, it's really all down to the bandwidth. I think the original 1.1 spec only went to 1080i, 1.2 added some extra features and upped the speed to 1080p/60. v1.3 is a bit more complicated....if you aren't using deep colour (is anyone ) a standard v1.2 HDMI cable will be fine since the data rate is the same at 1080p.
For deep colour applications the speed bump is quite significant (upto 2.25GHz from 1.5GHz at 1080p). This has brought about the need for different cables which are tested to different standards:
Catagory 1 cables (aka standard HDMI 1.3) are only tested to work upto 1080i
Catagory 2 cables (aka high speed HDMI 1.3) are tested to work upto silly fast "future" speeds, but you need them for 1080p and deep colour.
If you selcet the "cables and connectors" option in the following link there's loads of info directly from the people that control the HDMI standard:

You need a component lead for the wii
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_ce/202-1761899-1889401?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=component+wii&x=8&y=14
Mine plugs into a LCD 40" TV with 3 hdmi and using the component sockets
The wii only goes up to 480p HDMI starts at 720p0 -

Pretty sure that's the one I bought my sister, and there's a noticeable improvement over the scart on her LCD telly. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Wahey - I've just bought one myself! Great price...0 -

The questions I have about this is that the HDMI standard is not just for high definition picture it can also provide greatly improved sound(for example 5.1 if the wii supports it) so isn't it worth using an hdmi cable just for that?0
