I've filled up all the space on my old 5gb Rio carbon and I'm after a new mp3 player. I'm looking for something with 20gb+ space, but I don't need video as I can do that on my phone. I've been having a look at the old creative zen touch on ebay, they're around £40-60, secondhand but I'm a little dubious about buying secondhand things like this. Can anyone suggest something around this price range, and where to get it from? Maybe from a reputable refurbished dealer as I'm probably wanting a model thats a couple of years old now, because I want it cheap and without video!

Apple have a good refurb store, but there are no large iPods available at the moment, just some 4 and 8 Gb models.

Thanks isofa, I'll keep checking on there. I doubt that if they get any large capacity ipods in they'll be in my price range though; £100 for a refurb 8gb nano seems ridiculous to me. But you never know, seeing as how I wouldn't mind an older black and white screen one. Thanks.

In my humble opinion; stick with Sony.

I have had all sorts, including Creative which I use now, but would always choose the Sone, pennies permitting.

I wouldn't touch Apple if my Moving Picture Experts Group Audio Layer 3 depended on it....
    Reassuringly expensive

I can understand where agaveworm is coming from, even though from my experience I have made a different choice.

Everyone will have an opinion, I'm keen on the iPods, because, like you I've had various brands of music player, but in my opinion the iPods have been the best, reliable, beautifully made, and the interface, to me, is perfect. There is an attention to detail that is lacking in other devices. We dave 3 in the family, none have ever failed as yet. The devices are above the quality of Sony devices IMO, and I have quite a bit of Sony gear in our house. However it's a very subjective opinion.

Sony I ruled out long ago for MP3 players because their early insistence to use non-standard formats (ATRAC). It's similar to how they have clung on to their proprietary MemoryStick when everyone else is using better standards like CF and SD. Sony just aren't a big player in this market any more, they seriously took their eye off the ball.

Quite happy to use Apple, whether or not my Motion Picture Experts Group 1 Audio Layer 3 depends on it ;)

Thanks for all your help guys. That ipod on ebay's now at over £100; way over budget but thanks anyway. I'm not too fussed about the brand as long as it's not something unheard of because IMO the software and interface won't be as good. I also have a fairly deep set hatred of apple lol, but I would consider an ipod at the right price. I've been looking at all three brands which you speak of. I'm also looking at the really old 30gb ish zen nomads, are they any good? There's quite a few on ebay for about £50. Thanks again guys.

Not strictly true. Also, take a look at Rockbox.

I just took a look, and there's nothing really with a sensible amount of storage in the midrange. Up to £100 there are players up to maybe 10GB, using flash memory or microdrives, whereas you can get a 160GB ipod for just under £200. I'd really grudge buying a cheaper thing when for 2x the price I could get 20x the storage.

Thanks weegie, I've heard of rockbox before, looks pretty good. I know what you mean, but on ebay atm there are various mainly creative 20 or 30gb players for around the £50 mark, and I just cannot justify spending £200 on a music player. I would never fill 160gb.

Creative have a refurb section on their site, they have 30-gig vision M's for £90, might be worth a look. especially if you're considering paying £50 - £60 for a second hand one from ebay. I know a few people who've bought them and they've always been in perfect condition.
