i found this out yersterday and cant believe it.
i was fuming at having to pay 5p for a bloody bag.

You shouldn't have to pay for a bag, free ones are still available (although 'guarded' by the c/o!)

If you pick up the current copy of the free asda mag, there is an article inside about the bags, and it quite clearly states that free bags are still available, so if the c/o refuses wave it under their nose!!!!!

I'll find my copy tomorrow and tell you exactly what it says.

    Here's my tip guys:

Ask for a free bag. If you're refused just say that you thought it was ASDA policy (as stated on the net) to be given a free bag if you ask. If you're still refused then just remember the assistants name and email Asda Customer Services stating that contrary to their stated policy you were refused free bags from (named cashier).

You'll get a free gift card AND.. if it happens a lot, they'll soon sort their act out and drill it into their staff to give out the free bags. :)
  • regarding why should they be free. well because the supermarkets have been able to absorb the cost for years and it was their choice to do so. secondly charging for them wont make any difference. even if they were very expensive. if they were expensive then people would have to just buy bin bags instead. so whatever happens it wont make a difference to the amount of bags going to landfill. forcing people to get sturdier bags just means bags with more plastic in them going to landfill like i said.

I do not think they absorbed the price of giving carrier bags without charge, I remember when we had to pay for them. Once they were free the prices increased on most things in the stores, also when Tesco introduced the club card I also recall seeing many prices increase to cover the little they gave as a reward.

I had the same issue recently, not expecting to do any shopping but tempted by their "eat out / in for £10" offer. It was one of the Simply Food stores and the manageress was serving on the tills and she insisted that I needed to pay 5p for a bag. So I asked that my (unbagged) shopping was sent to the 'collect by car' point.

    .

ha! Mine was the eat in for £10 offer as well..I'd actually only gone into M and S for a nightgown for my mother. It's not the 5p I particularly object to, it is the fact that I am paying them to advertise the store. Also, have any of the supermarkets actually confirmed that all this money will go direct to green charities, or is there a chance that all or part of the money charged will go into profits?

At the beginning of the week in the local Asda the 'free' bags were hidden under the counter, went Saturday and they were back on the counter to help yourself.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

    from their site - http://www.marksandspencer.com/gp/node/n/76967031
All of the 1.85p profit from the sale of single use food carrier bags will be donated to Groundwork.

it is a pointless joke. since asda started doing it recently that has become obvious. they either offer you one of the free bags or they ask you to buy a bag for life in a way that makes you feel bad if you say no. all it means is i will be buying bags for 5p that will all still go in the bin as soon as i am in need of a rubbish bag. the difference is the supermarket is making money out of the environmental issue and a bag that contains more plastic will be going into landfill.

i dont feel at all bad about saying no

    Hi
I went armed with my flippin' reusable bags on Friday..(Which I'd grudgingly bought the previous week).....to be told by a very fed up CSA that ASDA had backtracked, and now the bags were free again. No rationing this week....a big pile at the end of each till.
I asked why, and the girl said there'd been so much backlash from customers that Head Office decided that they will phase them out "sometime in the future".
The previous week, I'd got very annoyed when I had to insist on a "free" bag for a dripping chicken....I certainly didn't want that contaminating my fresh bread, and the miserable CSA said "Well, you'll have to bring one bag just for meat and perishable stuff!"
    Getting to hate shopping......

That's the other thing to consider. I use large reusable bags in Tesco for my main shop but have ruined several with leaky milk containers or from blood dripping from meat trays. So now I always pack all my dry stuff and tins etc in my own bags and ask for a couple of plastic ones for the stuff likely to contaminate.
