ASDA Carrier Bags - No more freebies

I had a problem recently in M and S due to their 'no free bags' policy. When I do my main shopping in Tesco I always carry reusable bags, but on this occasion I had been lured by a special offer in M and S while I was out clothes shopping. Got to the till with half a dozen bits and bobs and was told I would have to pay 5p for a bag, so I refused. The cashier said I had to have a bag and I insisted I would walk round the store with my goods in my arms as long as she gave me a receipt in case I was stopped..two free carrier bags were produced immediately as apparently I was not allowed to walk round their store with unbagged goods.

Just wondered if this would apply to Asda as well?

I am old enough to remember paying for bags in the past, however on the occasions I needed one I would always turn it inside out as I would not pay to advertise their shop.

they have started keeping the free bags under the counter in my local asda today. there seemed to be plenty at the self service tills. i wonder if i will get a telling off from the girl that watchs the self service tills if i go to grab one from there? i reckon if there are supermarkets who dont have the policy asda now have then people will take their custom to those places.

i am not sure if i have talked about another issue yet but how many people like me use the free bags as rubbish bags? since the council brought in wheelie bins and stopped giving people bin bags we have used carrier bags instead.

This just exposes the baloney that it is has anything to do with the environment. Most of these environmental measures are mere tokenism or disguised tax hikes.

Whilst Prince Charles books 14 first class seats to fly New York to pick up an environmental award and calls for tax increases to force poor people off planes.

There is more baloney and hypocrisy talked about the issue of the environment since, well Malthus and population growth.

it is a pointless joke. since asda started doing it recently that has become obvious. they either offer you one of the free bags or they ask you to buy a bag for life in a way that makes you feel bad if you say no. all it means is i will be buying bags for 5p that will all still go in the bin as soon as i am in need of a rubbish bag. the difference is the supermarket is making money out of the environmental issue and a bag that contains more plastic will be going into landfill.

i found this out yersterday and cant believe it.
i was fuming at having to pay 5p for a bloody bag.
if they care about the environment that much why dont they give us paper bags that can be recycled easily and are no harm to the world!!!!!
i live in a high rise block of flats with no lift or rubbish shutes.
we have to throw our rubbish out daily as the flat is very very hot and the rubbish stinks after a day, i need to use carrier bags daily to throw the rubbish out.
so now its foing to cost me a fortune.

I really don't see the problem in paying for the bags....... If anything I think the price should be much more, to discourage people using them too freely. Re the bin bag thing hmmmm, not too sure. I didn't really think about that. Mind you ther are many other places you can get your bags for free. ie local shops. But why should they be "free".......?

the problem with paper bags is they will get soggy if it rains. they would be fine if we all had a car. that is one thing that gets forgotten regarding this issue. not everyone has a car.

regarding why should they be free. well because the supermarkets have been able to absorb the cost for years and it was their choice to do so. secondly charging for them wont make any difference. even if they were very expensive. if they were expensive then people would have to just buy bin bags instead. so whatever happens it wont make a difference to the amount of bags going to landfill. forcing people to get sturdier bags just means bags with more plastic in them going to landfill like i said.
