ASDA Carrier Bags - No more freebies

I was in my local Asda yesterday and nothing was said to me about paying for carrier bags in fact the girl just threw a load at me to put my shopping in even though I might add I had a coupleof bags with me.0

Why can't they use paper bags like loads of US supermarkets do? Biodegradable, easily recyclable...0

i didn't mean to thank you for that.
it doesn't really matter what they use, it's not going to effect the environment one iota.helpful tips

paper brown bags are very expensive to produce. to make recycled paper actaully costs more then to make 'virgin' paper.
im not sure the whole carrier bag save the enviroment thing will work, but firstly the oil used in making the bags will be reduced and the whole energy used to produce the bags will be reduced if we arent using so many, so one point to the green issues, and secondly, i myself dont like to see plastic carrier bags wrapped round trees and stuck in hegderows every time i go out, so the less of that the better.so another point to the green issues.
remember about 15 years ago you had to pay for carrier bags, then supermarkets started giving them away to attract customers, so they are to blame.
reduce reuse recycle. everyones got used to looking after them selves, me me me, take take take, its free get it, just for the sake of having it.do you need a whole cupboard full of plastic bags?0 -
no.
i did re-use them until the supermarkets started trying to earn brownie points for looking after the environment. now, they go in the bin.helpful tips

well if they stopped jumping onto the green bandwagon in the aim of saving/making money and disguising it as trying to save the environment, it wouldn't happen.

It's in advance of possible legislation from the UK Government, not initiatives from the supermarkets, so blame the Gov't. Brown threatened to bring in a Parliamentary act if plastic bag use was not curtailed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7270358.stm). To me, actively throwing them away seems supremely wasteful and more than a little selfish.0 -
to be honest, i am blaming the government more than supermarkets as i know it's them leading the charge into our pockets.
does any one know of any countries where they haven't started reaching into people's pockets to save the world? i want to move there.
